Norton Antivirus forces reinstall

For the past few days I've been getting this message from NAV 2002 on booting up:
"Cannot read subscription data. Please re-install Norton AntiVirus."

    - My virus definitions were up to date as of last week
    - All Win 2000 patches had been applied (relevant in respect of the blaster worms etc.)

I ignored the NAV warning message until yesterday when I got one of those damn popup messages that is associated with the blaster worm. Whereas I have had NAV 2002 installed from the beginning of the year, and my subscription would have expired at the end of the year, on reinstalling it, it gave me a whole new years subscriptions starting from today. (Ordinarily, an uninstall will retain the date, so reinstalling it can't be used as a 'system' to continue to get full year virus definition updates).

Anyway, so I get another full years virus updates, super, but how did the popup message get in if I had applied all of the Win 2000 updates?

Have they developed a variant of blaster that allows them to circumvent the Windows patches in the last few days? This article seems to suggest that they have: http://www.mynetwatchman.com/kb/security/articles/popupspam/
