NTL bband....why not?

    Considering getting broadband and the usage cap is a bit of an annoyance (am thinking of getting the latest eircom offer).

    Upon doing a little research I've found NTL cable internet, it appears too good to be true, no usage cap!

    Soooo....where's the catch?

    Is it the theoretical slowdown of cable modems once lots of people in your area start using them? I say 'theoretical' by way of asking anyone out there to confirm/deny it happens with NTL or makes any difference.

    Is NTL really restricted in who can actually get the modem fitted? I'm in south Dublin, near foxrock and am subscribed to NTL for TV (basica channels).

    Is it not really uncapped...in that if I get it and start downloading like a lunatic (which I would) then will I get a swift email/call from NTL saying stop hogging the line?

    I'm thinking of the 600kbps service they have, only 40 euros a month and seems fine. BUT.....not many people here seem to be talking about it so I assume it must be crap/ hard to get.

    Please help....I have the eircom 'engineers' coming out to inspect my place for possible connection and wan't to know if I should just go with NTL.

    Cheers!

    Crap :(

    But....that said, is it a good service? The current holy grail of broadband in that it has no usage cap?

    The NTL website doesn't state anything about city limitations....ARGH@!

    ++++++++++++=

    Scratch that:

    How do I order the service?

    The Always-On Broadband Internet service is available in certain parts of West Dublin. To order the service or for enquiries, please call 1800 923 005.

    ++++++++

    Talk about tucking it away on the site....BUGGER.

    o and also when they say west part thats just a bunch of (excuse me) bs. Cause I'm in the west and its not available. Only a few streets in west :)
    I used to have ntl 600k but moved. I'dd say its the best u can get in ireland really cause i dloaded at 73kb, pings at 30-70 and stable.
    But its not really cable cause like i mentioned in another topic friends in the states get 150kb when he dloads :)
    But it is the best u can get so if u can go for it otherwise i would recommend UTV or Esat BT dsl even though they have a cap of 5gb but its better then nothing right :). O and stay away from eircom i think u know that by now.
    Theres always wireless but i don't know much about it, so im not sure if its stable or not.
    For ntl just call them up and they will ask for adress and all , they will tell u if its available or not

    I got the NTL 600k service over a month ago and generally I am pleased with it . There were some outages 8-9 days ago, and sometimes it seems slower than usual but for the most part its a reliable service. D/l's are normally 50kbs- 78kbs and no cap. I think I have D/l'ed a small percentage of the internet and no mail received from NTL so far. This beats all the other BB offerings out there for the moment anyway.

    Cheers

    Lucan, Johnswood estate. We were BB enabled about 6-7 weeks ago but a letter from NTL advertising this fact only arrived today.

    Me too (about 9 weeks now).

    NO outages

    NO speed drops

    100GB in first 5 weeks (just for the hell of it)

    Just because someone can download faster than you, doesn't mean that you don't have cable. It just means that they have a faster connection than you.

    Or, just because a porsche drives faster than your mini, doesn't mean you don't have a car!
