Motorola did their official announcement today of their MPx200 Microsoft Smartphone 2003 handset. They also outlined it will finally be available on a US operator, AT&T before the end of the year.

This is an important step in the evolution of the Microsoft Smartphone with a Tier-1 handset manufacturer coming out with a device and (finally!) a US operator willing to run with it. Orange will also be offering the handset on their network (they were the first operator to offer an MS Smartphone device last year).

Device details and spec available here.

Have been using an MS Smartphone for a few weeks now and it's a pretty impressive offering, although, the OS needs a few third-party applications (web-clipping, multi-email box, task-manager) to augment the basic features. A new version of the OS (Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone) is due out before year end - and should improve some of the areas where things are currently lacking - primed and ready for a new wave of devices to be announced...
