888 gives you 8 balanced outputs/inputs as well as 4 x stereo AES/EBU inputs and outputs. These digital ins/outs are particularly useful

The noise floor on the 888 is superior to the 882 - you can actually "see" the noise from an 882 on your meters even when there's no signal running (!).

You can (with the necessary number of cards and cables) run multiple 888 or 882 interfaces. Something you can't do with a Digi001.
One useful feature of the Digi001 is the 'adat' lightpipe connector. With a suitable convertor box you can use this to give you an additional 8 discrete inputs and outputs.

The Digi001 is a completely different product. If you've got a system with an 888 you probably have a TDM system and as such you can run plug-ins on that system without impacting your CPU performance.
