Does anybody here have any idea on the legality of these documents. Apparently they are a standard thing in employment but I reckon that if the only place that will offer you employment when you leave is a place that is in with your company already then it makes little or no sense for somebody to sign this.

It would seem to me that the company you signed the agreement for would have to pay you for the twelve months that you could not work in the only place that you could get work.

Anyway any lawyers about that can A Make any sense of what I have written and B tell me whether or not they are legal.

Yes they are legal and are the standard with most companies, it doesnt stop you working for other companies of the same nature as your old company it simply means that if you disclose any of the practices etc of your old company they can bring you to court for breach Of Contract.
