I heard yesterday that Croke Park was to be used for a concert in August next year, but nobody knew who it was going to be.

My g/f and I sumised that there was only one band big enough for them to give Croke Park to, and sure enough, I was asking around this morning and as it turns out it's definately them!

Don't all go rushing over to ticketmaster all at once, the tickets aren't on sale yet, but form an orderly queue beind me will ye! ;)

I really can't wait, I was supposed to be going to Oz in the spring, but I can't bear to leave without seeing them, so I guess Oz will have to wait!

Remember where you heard it first. :D:D:D

not sure of the exact date yet, but its definately some time in August, although there is no indication of any activity on the U2 website or anywhere else (ticketmaster etc.).

guess we'll just have to wait.

Earlier in the year people were convinced that they were to play Phoenix Park in August...

I got the initial info that there would be 'someone' at croke from someone at the grounds and then the final confirmation from someone else who's a manager in a hotel who is already taking preliminary bookings for crew, so I'm pretty certain it's for definite.

aside from anything else, who else would be big enough to get the go ahead for something like that?

ok, ok, point taken, but MY point is that it's happening.

    aren't you excited?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,213 ✭✭✭✭therecklessone

    Excited, moi? Not really.

If its anything like Slane, then the overpriced tickets will sell out in a few minutes, mostly to overseas punters, thus denying Irish people a chance to see U2 play in Ireland again.

Note: this is not an anti-foreigner rant by any means, but its not as if U2 don't play shows around the world on a regular basis...

Big deal, shur half of U2 is british anyhow

So what if half of them is British thats not what therecklessone is trying to say.

What I'm trying to say is that they're as much british as irish so brits can come over to see them here if they so wish. They've as much entitlement to see the gig here as we have to see stuff over there.
Anyway, I wouldn't say the majority of the tickets go abroad.

    Ok, maybe not a majority.

But here's a thing. The U2 tickets were due to go on sale at 9am on a Saturday morning for Slane, right? I know, I was in work frantically trying to get a break so I could try phoning ticketbastard. Now, I know somebody who had a mate in England who was able to buy tickets at 12am Saturday, a full nine hours before we could. That was through a UK ticketing agency.

Ticketbastard sold 6 tickets at a time...and the internet doesn't differentiate between Irish and non-Irish when you book online. Sure weren't hundreds turned away from HMV because they'd sold out, despite some queuing for hours?

All I'm saying is: U2 oroginally announced one Irish date, at Slane, that year. This was a legendary Irish band, playing a legendary Irsh venue. It was far more of an attraction than say U2 at Dortmund. So the proportion of tickets sold outside the country would have been higher for the Irish shows than other European shows.

FFS, I've met U2 fans all around Europe who've told me they'd love to see U2 in Ireland. Can you imagine Radiohead fans saying the same about a show in Glasgow?

It could go a long way to funding the
rebuilding of Hill 16 (not sure if that's
really cared about on this forum?).

Would be a brilliant concert but I'd
imagine the tickets will cost a lot
more than a Slane ticket. Now that
Robbie has been alowed to play the
Phoenix Park why aren't U2 following
suit? There would be a higher
capacity and also there would be the
    potential for more people without
tickets to spend the time in the
concert and still enjoy the event...
