Routing question

Not sure if this would be better in Comms, but here goes.

My Suse 8.2 Linux box is connected to my Axim PDA via a WiFi card in peer (ad-hoc) mode, no problems there, can ping, can see web pages served up via apache, and can download files from Linux to the PDA.

I want to be able to dial up the internet on the Linux machine and browse the web on the PDA, with the Linux machine as a router, I presume.

My problem is that the route add command is for static routes, I believe, but when I dial the 'net, I get a different IP address every time. When I am not connected to the 'net, the ppp0 interface is not available (does not appear when I do an ifconfig). My question is therefore, how do I get the Linux machine to route traffic from the PDA to the internet and vice versa? (I plan to dial the internet connection manually each time).

    Thanks,

    TD.

    Hi Tom,
your ppp0 address doesn't matter to the Axim.
The Axim routes through the Suse box, which in turn routes through the ppp0 interface.
pppd usually sets the ppp0 interface to be the default route on the machine when it connects,
so you don't need to worry about that.

You need to find the address of the ethernet or wifi interface
on your SuSE box - the one on the same network as the Axim.
Then you need to tell the Axim to use that IP address as its default gateway.

Find a simple firewall script for the suse box.
projectfiles.com have a good one that's powerful and easy to set up.
This will set up your suse box to NAT your connection from the Axim.

You could also install and configure squid and then set the SuSE box up as the Axim's web proxy.

Setting the suse box to dial on demand is the easiest way around getting the link brought up by the PDA.

    Hope that gets you started,
    NiallB.
