For all the talk about the ESB trying to suppy internet over power lines, here is a product that suppose to allow local networking using your power sockets... and quite possibly allow to you setup a local community network house to house maybe??

    Possibilities would be...
community network sharing a dsl or satellite connection without wireless or needing an operation license...

    here is the
    Link

    Looks interesting.. :)

This isn't new, they have been on sale for probably years now. You can get them from Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and others for as little as $50 a pop.

They are based on the HomePlug standard, which is designed to be operated in one house only, though I guess there is no reason why what you are suggesting wouldn't work (though the range is limited to 200 metres). That said, the things won't get past transformers.

    1. This thread isn't about the ESB
    2. The ESB are actually doing just that (putting electricity and data on the same copper) in a trial in Tuam

    They have them in clontarf..

    Devolo MicroLink dLan USB adapter

Uses existing in house electricity cables
just plug into power socket to network PC's
14Mbps, range up to 200m, USB interface
USB cable and power adapter incl.
Drivers for Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP

    Euro 120.00 incl. VAT 21%

    ==========================================

The advantage is of course NON-Line of sight
The range is fairly short - you might consider Cat5e (100m) for links that don't cross roads etc.
And Wifi would also be usable

It's a case of mix and match - but as said above transformers (sub-stations) will restrict range to a single estate at best - and I've no idea how they interact with baby monitors or with X10 home automation systems..

These devices suffer from the same basic problems that PLT has with passing through the meter, transformers etc so most of the time the Home Plug stuff isn't going to work between houses.
