I need to transfer a couple of thousand euros to someone in the US. What's the cheapest way to do this, and are there legal considerations i need to take into account, such as being slapped with large taxes or duties, or what?

If you are transferrring large amounts of money it will be reported to the regulartory authorities, here (any amount worthty of suspicion) and in the USA (US$10,000), but this is nothing to worry about.

Each bank will have a a system set up to wire the money, one system is near instantaneous the other takes about 2 days. It's simply a matter of shopping around to see who will give you the best deal for the specific amount.

Intra-Euro transfers can be done for less than €1.
