The farce that is, The legend of mir!

I thought I'd post this up, as there are a few people trying to encourage others to play mir,and I dont like it

So, Im going to share with you all, my experience in this excuse of an MMORPG.

Its a lovely, irish summer day (its pissing out of the heavens), and I just got my digital dish that morning. So I waited the 5 or so hours before I can go ahead and use it,and then begin flicking through the channels. One channel I find, has "Game Network" plastered on it, and when I turn it on, its showing super smash bro's melee, to a rather spiffy soundtrack. Entrigued,I sit down and watch it for a while. It was a good enough channel, with some annoying accents thrown into the mix.

So later, a show came on called the legend of mir (Although the timeslot clearly said "gameclip") After watching what seems like a relativly good RPG, I decided to go and download it and play it myself.

After 150megs of downloading on my poor 56k modem,I was ready to play. And I must say, I thought the game was absolute brilliance. The community was good enough, and the game itself was enjoyable, with plenty to do.

Life was good. For about 3 months. Then, p2p came in. After eventually finding a way to get access to a credit card, I went to continue play. But no, everything went wrong.

The community fell to peices. PlayerKillers were all over the place, and in general, none of the nice people had much fun any more. Nevertheless, I continued to play, joined a guild which consisted only of decent people (god knows how I got in ;))

Things only got worse from here. Soon, The database leaked out. The database contained everybodies level, username, and password. Apparently,it was availible on an ftp meant for only GameMasters, Admins ect... But they forgot to password the ftp. And a small group of people who were a bit nosey, decided to check it out,and found a lot of things that they really shouldnt have.

And so, with everybodies username and password, They decided to access people's accounts, and transfer their money, and items over to their own characters. This caused an eruption on the forums, people screaming "My accounts been hacked, whats going on?"

This was ignored for a while. The people that knew the GM's, Admins ect personally, had their characters and items restored. Everybody else was in a sense, screwed. This caused the community even more unease. I knew a GM,and some other people high up myself, and had a few words with them. Most of them were as confused as I was. The others wouldnt comment.

So I decided to keep my mouth shut, it hadnt happened to me yet. There wason average, 8 people a day posting about leaving the game because of their accounts being hacked. Myself, and most of the people I knew, were expecting some sort of new security measure. Perhaps changing all passwords, a server rewind ect. But no. Instead, accounts being hacked was blamed on "users running trojan horses, and having their passwords stolen". Now, I know that a few people would have their acc's stolen by running trojan horses, but jesus, nobodies going to beleive that many account hackings are happening a day. 8 people a day complaining on the forums, and only 25% of mir users access the forums. Just about every time someone complaining about their account being hacked, they got told it was their fault, that they ran a trojan horse, and that theres nothing the staff can do about it. The thread would then be locked.

And then, a GameMaster's account was hacked, and it took 3 days for any of the staff to notice. At this stage, the entire game was in havoc. Level40+ enemies running about the starter villages, piles of 20million gold being landed around the place, items being spawned everywhere... and so, 3 days later, the game has to be rewinded. All damage was reversed, but christ, these things shouldnt be happening. Most people got smart, and asked if a GameMaster ran a trojan. They werent given a reply, and some of the people that said that were banned from the forums.

Eventually, my account was hacked, and I was given the same "you ran a trojan" bull****, and I didnt accept it. I told them that I knew its their own fault for leaking the database. The post was very, very swiftly deleted. Oddly enough,I wasnt banned. I got in touch with one of my friends, a forum mod and ex-GameMaster. He gave me an email address, and that they'll contact me back soon enough. So I emailed them, and told them whats going on, and mentioned the database malarky too. about a week later,I got my reply. They asked me to update my subscription, as they wont restore an unpaid-for account, and then they'll rewind my character.

So I went and paid the tenner or so, and emailed them back saying everythings in working order. A week passed, no reply. Then two. Then three. Then a month. My account's subscription ran out again, and I emailed them again, telling them to get their arses in gear. No response ever came. over the course of 2 months,I sent another 4 emails, and there was no reply, ever. And yet, a friend emailed them about a different matter, that the cc system wasnt accepting his number, and he got his reply in 4 days. I read the EULA carefully, and it basicly says that once I pay, they own me. If they dont want to give me what I paid for, its up to them. I cant do a thing about it.

So I posted on the forums about it, admitably quite ****ing angry. The post was once again, deleted, and I was banned. There was a huge amount of unease on the forums already, as a patch that had been promised about 6 months ago(7 months after the games release) hadnt arrived yet (it still hasnt arrived), and a patch promised to keep people occupied while they completed the christmas patch(the 6 months ago one), which was promised a month ago, still hadnt arrived either. This patch arrived 6 months later. And of course, the christmas never arrived.

So I decided to toss it,I couldnt play in a game like this. I kept my eyes on the forums every now and then though. But once again, the mir staff went and ****ed up. Still without passwording their FTP, they released the actual mir server, and it was up there for a good 2hrs. and of course,it was downloaded, and was made public. Almost anybody can go and run their own server now. Theres even servers running the christmas patch, and is about 90% translated. I was even running one by the end of the week. Some very good communitys were established too. Dizzy's server is how mir should have been made from the beggining.

And so, 2 months ago,I decided to give it another go, with some very very heavy persuasion. So I signed up, and went on the forums. Digitalbro's(who run euro-mir) was threatened with legal action from WEMADE (the creators of mir), because of the very very poor handling of the community, and not paying WEMADE royalties. A full apology was issued by WEMADE for handing over the game to digitalbros. I was never quite sure of what happened after this, but nothing ever came of it. But the staff started actually doing work.

And finally, some security precautions were taken. They were going to reset everybodies password, and email them their password within a week or so.

Now, what im about to tell you, is what really, REALLY takes the cookie. Its even bad for the mir staff. I couldnt help but laugh when this happened. Are you seated? Good. Read on...

They mailed everybody wrong passwords. Some people got about 5 account's usernames and passwords, Others gone none. yes, you heard me right. I was one of the people that never got their passwords back, and after posting about it on the forums - yup, you guessed it. Banned. Honestly,I couldnt stop laughing. I dont even know how they managed to do this one, but nothing was ever done to correct it. and 2 months on, I still havent received my password. Im damn lucky I didnt play much or pay for the subscription again, otherwise I would have been awfully pissed off.

And so ends my life in what is quite possibly, the worst run professional MMORPG of all time. And my god, I can honestly say that this game would put years on anyone. (So dustaz, be careful or you might be in the home sooner then you think).

A few more smaller things happened in my time in mir that I never bothered to write about. Such as the official site advertising a rival MMORPG. But lets leave that until another day, yes? Im sure your eyes are hurting you enough from all this reading.

So remember, if you want to play the game - bloody dont. Unless you WANT to be frustrated beyond beleif. I hope you've all learned a lesson from this. Dont. play. mir. ever.
