Large parts of the Sligo line between Enfield and Longford will be closed from 17th-24th of September, to allow platform extensions for 8 carriage stock, replacement of sleepers and tracks at stations and the installation of electronic signaling. During this period Irish Rail will be running coach transfers, although these are a movable feast, with some transfers running all the way from Sligo to Dublin.

Irish Rail have yet to decide if they'll bother posting this information up on their website, as it could be used by customers to plan their journey, which would be against company policy.

Infrastructure Improvement Work - Longford and Sligo services to be affected from 17th to 24th Septm by Media & PR

Major infrastructure works are set to commence at Mullingar Station designed to facilitate a new computerised signalling system, and increase the capacity of commuter services serving the station and the Longford commuter route.

The first phase of the works will take place from Wednesday 17th September to Wednesday 24th September and will involve adjustments to the position of the track in the Mullingar Station area.

This will facilitate subsequent work, to allow the lengthening of the main platform at Mullingar to accomodate eight -carriage commuter railcar trains - the current maximum train size, for Longford/Dublin commuter services, is six carriages.

These works will also incorporate features to prepare for the new computerised signalling system planned for the Sligo/Mullingar/ Dublin route.

During the initial works, from 10.00hrs on 17th September to 18.30hrs on 24th September, the line between Enfield and Edgeworthstown will be closed to permit the station works to take place.

Services will be affected as follows:

Sligo to Dublin services - will involve bus transfers from Edgeworthstown to Mullingar and Enfield except 05.15hrs Monday only Sligo to Connolly will be replaced by bus transfers for the full journey.

Dublin to Sligo services - will involved bus transfers from Enfield to Mullingar and Edgeworthstown except the 17.05 hrs Friday only Connolly to Sligo service will involve bus transfers from Enfield to all station to Sligo.

Longford to Dublin commuter services (06.20hrs, 07.03hrs) - will involve bus transfers from Longford, Edgeworthstown and Mullingar to Enfield, and will depart up to 20 minutes earlier from Longford, Edgeworthstown and Mullingar.

Dublin to Longford commuter services (17.15 hrs, 18.50hrs) - will involve bus transfers from Enfield to all stations to Longford.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for any inconvenience caused by these essential works, which will deliver improvements in capacity and safety on the route in the future.
