Band's were not invited onto the show to pad out each episode, far from it. Their appearance classed the episodes as Light Entertainment, and by BBC's own rules and regulations entitled the series to a larger budget than a comedy show would normally receive.

The Young Ones were just pure class. I also vividely remember when Madness appeared on it, solice. Actually, I think they might have made a couple of appearances on it. Or maybe I'm thinking of another similar Ska band of the time.

Ade Edmonson, Rik Mayall, Michael Ryan, Nigel Planer, Alexei Sayle.... pure class.

    All together now.......

<drums> Dum de de dum dum, </drums>

    Once in every lifetime
    Comes a love like this.
    Oh I need you,
    You need me,
Oh my darling can't you seeeeeee?
    Young ones.
    Darling we're the young ones. <quack noise> QUACK! </quack noise>
    The young ones <whistle noise> PHREEEEPPPP! </whistle noise>
    <Rick Mayall voice> Shouldn't be afwaid. </Rick Mayall voice>
    To live,
    Love,
There's a song to be sung.
For we may not be the young ones very long.

And yes, I did type that up from listening to the sound file I have on the computer here of the theme tune. Sound effects and all! :D

I think that 80's band Amazulu also appeared. It was a class show. They wouldn't make it today. Sitcom has gone so formula.

TV has also gone serious. There are so good comedys out there.

Got series 1 on DVD and series 2 on divx :)

It's strange to think they only made 12 episodes in total, the series seemed to run much longer than that for some reason (it aired from 1982 to 1984). The great thing about the young ones was how an episode could completly digress from the plot that had been running up to that point; for instance a visit by Neills parents turns into an episode of 'The Good Life' with Mike, Vyv, Neil and Rik planting cabbages in the garden. Rik murders Neill and hides the corpse in some compost. The compost somehow causes 3 duplicates of Neil to be made...and it goes on like that :)

Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmonson both did somthing similar later on in 'Bottom', but that focused more on slapstick and comedic violence....it wasn't a patch on TYO in my opinion, despite that it ran for much longer and they went and made a film (Guest house paradiso) spin off.

The show did also launch the careers of quite a few comedy actors; Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders and Alexi Sayle all got their breaks with TYO.

Yeah Madness appeared twice. Dexy's Midnight Runners and Motorhead also played on the show.

"Neil, the bathroom's free! Unlike the country under the Thatcherite junta..." ;)

I loved the young ones! My fave episode is the cliff one... when they rob a bank and go off in a bus together..
    "Eunice Stubbs!"
God,I cracked up when SPG died...
"Cheer up, Viv, you've still got SPG!"
"I don't think so Michael. He was alseep on the radiator..."

Another thing I've just remembered about The Young Ones is those little subliminal messages they used to put into the episodes. Remember how you'd be watching the show and then all of a sudden there would be a very quick, literally millisecond, flash of something on the screen? You'd then be left wondering "What the f**k was that?" It was only years later when we got a video recorder and the Beeb repeated the show and I had an episode taped that I was able to pause it and see what it was all about. But I do remember that when I saw it years beforehand I would always wonder what the hell was being flashed up on screen.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

    "Neil....you complete & utter basterd!!!" [/B]

    Said Rik no doubt :)

Nostalgia me friends  why aren't programs made like that anymore? I religiously watched the program at the time and clearly remember it getting me into a hyper state of crying with laughter on more than one occasion..

This has happened to me only once after the young ones and that was back in '95

Used to watch the young ones with me youngest sister (no one else in the family was interested) when I was about 14 and she must have been 11 :o

Remember the episode they all decided they had to go to the laundrette?

Or the one that Neil was cooking a dinner of.. a.. Rat?

Neil : 'What are those pale Hairy things. Oooh they're my legs!'
Neil : 'We plant the seeds, nature grows the seeds, then we..eat the seeds!'
I always hated Mike tho :P
