If you want it for making backups of your own DVD collection, I strongly recommend CloneDVD in conjunction with AnyDVD. Easy to use, reliable and excellent quality copies.
Not free, but you can download and use both (fully) for 30 days trial.

When you've got your burning software sorted out, I highly recommend DVDShrink for fitting those dual layer DVD's onto a single layer DVD-R. Excellent piece of software (http://www.dvdshrink.com)

For DVD *caugh* backing up I would HIGHLY recommend:

DVDDecryptor = ripping (will also burn if origional is a DVD-5)
DVD2One = DVD9 to DVD5
Nero = Burning
