On the 15th of August I signed up with UTV for broadband, so on the 4th of September I give them a call to check when I will have it activated. The guy on the line said they have been given an activation date (by €irCon) of the 2nd of Sep and it should be any day now, and then later that day my phone line dies (no dial tone). After a number of calls to the €irCon Muppets (some who said I'd signed up for BB with ESat and then some said I'd signed up with €irCon????) my line gets fixed today but the engineer who called to my house said the fault on my line was at the exchange caused by another engineer who hadn't a clue what he was doing, as a result I'd have to re apply for BB and wait the standard activation time. WTF?? This is all €ircons fault why should I have to wait another month?

A nice guy in UTV (Charles Mc Robert) told me he'd do his best but don't hold my breath, he also said €irCon have f**k all communication with UTV and it's very hard to get any info out of them.

Some of the excuse's from €irCon:
    1. Your line was on a Carrier Block and we switched it to a PSTN line
    2. The engineer said the fault was at the exchange, but then logged the fault as external
    3. You’re on the Swords exchange???? I'm on the Balbriggan exchange!
    4. It's a UTV problem!!!!

Ok but it's an €irCon exchange with €irCon engineers??? God I F**king Hate this company with a passion now! They should be all shot with their own balls of ****e!

Anyway guy's any suggestions on how I can get this resolved as soon as I can? I also assume I'm not the only one who's been messed around due to €irCon's stupidity!

Is this €irCon's way of messing up the competition so they get a bigger market share for BB?

    Regards,
    Maddog

Without standing as devil's advocate for eircom, don't believe all that UTV tell you.

Some of the reasons (excuses) you were given were obvious nonsense:

    1. Your line was on a Carrier Block and we switched it to a PSTN line

Eircom would not take you off a carrier just beccause you wanted BB. They would automatically just fail the jumpering task.

    2. The engineer said the fault was at the exchange, but then logged the fault as external

As for an engineer in the exchange not knowing what he was doing, this isn't really plausible, particularly in a small exchange in North Co. Dublin.

    3. You’re on the Swords exchange???? I'm on the Balbriggan exchange!

This one is classic. I would guess that the two of these towns are about 20 miles apart. There is no way on earth that a tech could mix up the two of these. He would know straight off what exchange you were on from your no.

    4. It's a UTV problem!!!!

Without justifying eircom, don't believe all Charles tells you. UTV aren't as white as the driven snow either.

    Regards.

    Thanks for your reply.

You seem to know a bit about the whole setup, could you please tell me what is exactly involved in activateing a line for broadband?

I had techie from the line fault section swear blind that I'm on the swords exchange, I still can't figure that one out? Hell I even had one swear I had signed up for BB with Esat and then had another say I'd signed up with €ircon!

Maybe but I've never had a problem with them before, is this a €irCon problem or a UTV problem?
Has anybody on Boards.ie had this type of problem before?

    Maddog,

as far as I recollect (I'll confirm this in the morning for you), all Balbriggan nos. begin with 841xxxx, and Swords ones with 840xxxx or 809xxxx, so from that you should know straight off which one you are in.

As regards them not not knowing which co. you ha gone with for service, I would imagine they were just presuming (in the case of the one that thought eircom), and guessing incorrectly (when she saw a code for a wholesale bundle) in the case of the other.

As regards UTV, don't get me wrong: as far as ISPs go, they are probably the best around, and are very customer-focused, but like anyone else, can at times, be "economical" with the truth.

Process-wise what you are looking at is yourself calling UTV to order the product. They will then contact eircom who will assign a job no. to the order, which is then passed on to a tech in the exchange for jumpering. Eircom Wholesale will confirm with UTV when this is completed, and will then start charging UTV for the bitstream product.
Obviously at this point, wanting to get their money from you, UTV will tell you that you are switched on, and will start billing you.

This is an abridged version, but without getting into too much rigmarole, it will give you a decent insight into what goes on.

    Regards.

Sorry should read 840xxxx or 890xxxx for Swords.

When I was with UTV bb (delt with the same guy as you) - my ports on the exchange were assigned to Esat.

It seems that Esat handle all the traffic for UTV. But UTV never give them a mention until something doesnt work - then everyone else gets the blame.

I'm still trying to get the mess Esat made of my dsl.

    ozmo.
Waiting on DSL to be sorted June 20 to present...

My number is 01 841xxxx it is on the Balbriggan exchange, the engineer had to fix it at the Balbriggan exchange. When I said this to the muppets at €irCon she put it down my neck that I was in fact on a PSTN line on the Swords exchange, anyway thanks for the info and feedback guys I guess it's gonna take another month or two to get all this mess sorted and get broadband activated on my line. They really can mess up what should be a very easy task for a communications company, I mean if I was a painter comming to paint your house and I said I can paint it but I can't open the tin of paint for 15 working days which turns out to be 34 days and then it's the wrong colour.... oh ****e you'll have to wait another 30 days now!!!!........ I've lost the plot....... I'm starting to rant.

Anyway time to pick up the phone and give someone at €irCon or UTV a right ear full.

    regards,
    Maddog.
