Fonts and older gnome apps

Is there a way to configure fonts in applications that don't conform to the gnome2 standard?

The attached screenshot shows gcdmaster and gaim side-by-side - is there any way to make gcdmaster look more like gaim? Failing that, can I at least make it (and other apps, such as Mozilla) use smaller, less clunky fonts?

You can compile mozilla to use XFT and gtk2 - that should make it look nice :)

I can post a script I'm using to roll my own firebirds if you want - I got it over on the mozillazine forums though.

I could do that, although I'm tending to try to stay within the bounds of apt-get at the moment.

I'm trying to find out how to set the default font for gtk (as opposed to gtk2) applications. Google, google...
