Oktoberfest Accomm

I'm thinking of trying to get over to Munich for the Oktoberfest, just wondering if there is anyone going, who has been or who just has lots of knowledge about Munich.

I'm not too concerned with the travel bit - my brief search on the internet is telling me that finding cheap accomodation will be the hard part.

Most things are already booked up - or else more expensive during the festival. Would also be interested in Campsites but they seem to be thin on the ground in Munich - maybe there is temporary ones during the festival?

Any tips / advice would be appreciated.

Don't know if this would be any help, we went just after the Oktoberfest last year and stayed in the Hotel Helvetia - quite a cheap little place and fine - email info@hotelhelvetia.net. Might be worth a try, although they could well be full.

Munich is great, well worth a visit. I'm surprised you're not having problems with the flights though, this time last year the only flights availble around the Oktoberfest went via Caracas. Seriously, I looked.

Yeah, I've been to Munich all too briefly, really cool place.

Wasn't thinking of flying to Munich - that wouldn't be possible I'm sure. Was more thinking along the lines of a £4.99 midweek ticket from Stansted to Friedrichshafen and then a short 3 hour train journey to Munich hauptbahnhof (providing Friedricshshafen airport is actually near to the town) god bless www.bahn.de:D

Best of luck with that. If it makes it any better, Munich airport is a bit of Ryanair job itself at 41 minutes outside on the train. Another option might be Salzburg, it's only 2 hours from Munich by (fast) train (we went on there afterwards). Ryanair fly to Salzburg also, maybe not so cheap though.

I would say Salzburg would be the best option. There are loads of trains doing that route. As someone hinted at I'd recommend a fast one if possible!

As for the beer fest. I knew guys who went on the last weekend last year. They said you have to reserve places at a table. If you're going in a very small group this may not be such a problem. I'd say early in the week it shouldn't be too bad though as not as many locals would be out but bear it in mind.

I'd also highly recommend a few hours (half a day would do it) in Salzburgs old town. Beautiful place.

Have fun.

If you are going by Salzburg, I would recommend a visit to the castle, there are very good views of both the town and the surrounding countryside from there. The park on the other side of the river is also good if you like your views. Salzburg is a pretty quiet place that gives off an air of genteel restraint in my experience, certainly quite a contrast to Munich, which is very lively at any time of the year.

Accomodation is going to be very hard to find. Some people that live in the city rent out their appartments for loads of money during the Oktoberfest. Usually you will have to book one year in advance. Camping is not so popular in Munich. What you can look for are euhm some kind of hostels. Maybe have a look on www.jugendherberge.de
Otherwise you could just camp somewhere outside. Lot of people are doing that in the summer, just place your tent at one of the lakes a bit outside of the city centre. And you dont need to be afraid of getting robbed.
I wouldnt recommend Salzburg, it is quite far away from Munich. Have a look for Freising, Augsburg, Landshut, Rosenheim ! Much much closer !
Oktoberfest is great ! Loads of people, loads of beer and chicken ! If you want to have a table in one of the beer halls you gotta be there in the morning. Or during the week. The Oktoberfest closes already at 11 in the evening so afterwards the people is full of drunk tourists.
For the flight, if you dont wanna go with AerLingus, I would recommend RyanAir to London and from there with Easyjet to Munich directly.
Let me know if you wanna know more :)
