Well the Draytek Vigor 2600, DSL router supports LAN to LAN VPN.

Pretty easy to setup, you just need two of them, one on each network (it will work with other VPN gear from Cisco, etc.)

Each router would cost about e220, that IS dirt cheap for VPN gear :)

Otherwise you could setup a linux box on each end as the router/proxy for your internal networks and run IPSec between them. Check out http://www.freeswan.org/ for more info, it is an opensource Linux VPN project.

To be honest, the Draytek routers would be a lot less work.

Actually just rereading your thread, I now realise you might not be running over DSL, if that is the case Draytek do VPN gear without the DSL modem part. I don't know how much it would cost.

Windows 2000 and XP both do software VPN, all you have to do is open the correct ports inbound and it'll work nicely.

Also note that make sure the address on both sides are different.

i.e. if you have a 192.168.0.x network, make sure your friend has 192.168.1.x network. As the vpn won't kick in otherwise.

    yea no worries,
VPNing was actually very easy. Turns out i all ready knew how to do it, its just i didn't have the right testing tools last time (I was practicing a vpn on my own home network). http://support.real-time.com/windows/vpn/windows_xp_vpn.html gives a good breakdown. it didn't work very well, I could browse the remote hard drive and interact etc, but the client machine lost net access after tunneling and we were unable to play games as if it were a LAN, which is the ultimate goal. Any tips on that would be great and would save us the bother of figuring it out. thanx :p
