Rte have the worst timing for adverts during a movie. Your there, eating away on some crisps... run off to get a drink.. get back infront of the box... getting all excited cause a good part is coming up and BANG... 'OXY gets rid of your spots for only 5.99'

Just something I wanted to get off my chest

I agree. They have no regard for the flow of the story. I've lost count of the amount of times they've cut to ads in the middle of someone talking!. They seem to deliberately place breaks where they'll cause maximum disruption to whatever you're watching.

    Grr arrg.

Ads are an affront to film viewing full stop. As is the all too comment "....and you can see the second part of tonights film after news and sport from London and Belfast..." AGH!

I agree who started breaking films for the news ?
Surely that would drop ratings ?
I'm sure folk can wait for the news ?

It's not as if the news changes that much since the last time it was on. Or any different from the hourly broadcasts on radio...

ITV seemed to be the first to try it.

ITV also edit movies to fit timeslots as well as the obligatory language and sex cuts, lousy channel.

Network 2 as are most channels I think you'll find, guilty of this.

They owe us! ITV should have a no ad, bad language and sex week...

On every show thay have to replace any non offensive language with chronic cursing and swearing. also any expression of love or mild affection should be replaced with 10 minutes of hardcore porn! including the ITN news!

I have never seen a film on RTE cut for time, as for the censoring AFAIK RTE do not edit films, they may occasionally get a cut version from distributors. I have never noticed any obvious ones though.

Next time Predator is on bet it's cut.
T2 the other night was the edited version.
These are just the films I know there's probably a lot more.

Is it just me or are BBC starting to cut the film's in 2? I was looking at tonights programming and found 'Heat' part2 is concluded after the news. I taught Utv were the only ones that did this crap?

RTE do NOT cut films. They may buy in an edited version but they have no censor themselves. TV3, on the other hand, do. So if a movie is cut on N2 it's because that's what they are given. It is good for TV shows though, because you get the full whammy of the likes of "The Sopranos" and "Oz". On the other hand, it's also why TV3 could show "Natural Born Killers" because they censored the offensive bits whereas RTE wouldn't do as such (because the full version was illegal to show, but not the cut one).

As to the ad breaks, I imagine it could be due - somewhat - to the same legislation enforced by the ITC in England. If you know US shows, you'll know that they often build their show's structure with the knowledge of ad breaks. So you go to an ad at a dramatic point often, enticing you to sit through the ads. In the UK this is forbidden because you're not allowed encourage people to sit through ads, which is what the US shows do. So their breaks to shows are more abritrary and seemingly odder. It could be that RTE have the same rules to go by and need to break at odd points. Having said that they do a sh!te job of it and generally I have a mental image of someone just stabbing a button to break for an ad whenever they feel like it, never bothering to glance at the screen....

I think the general gripe here is the technical ineptitude of whoever is in the VT room in RTE. There are a certain number of ad breaks to be scheduled in movies, e.g. the midweek movie, as well as the sponsor's idents (i.e. those terribly loud, annoying and dated Aero things). As far as I know the whole thing is manually done with the movie on one tape and the inserts and ads on anotehr tape. Trouble is RTE can't seem to get it right, and cut to an ad break before a piece of dialogue or a line is finished - or worse, cut too late and the next scene comes up for a brief second before the dreaded Aero thing.

It's so unprofessional, not to mention extremely unpleasant for the viewer. And how long is that bloody Aero sponsorship deal? Twenty years? They could at least devise a new series of idents with some imagination, like Miniature Heroes on TV3.

Anyone else suffer from Aero rage?

they should turn down the volume iswell for that thing, I always end up tripping over the remote in order to turn the volume down when that pair of lips start ..... and BTW that girl looks pretty chubby, maybe she should lay off the Aero's for a while !!!!

    rant over :p for now

If you think it's bad in Ireland you should try watching movies on german stations. Language issues aside, they break for adds which last well over 5 minutes. However, they do (sometimes) have the decency to roll back the film and show you the last scene again just to remind you of what the hell was going on!

Now wait just a second! Are you suggesting that hardcore porn isn't an expression of love and/or mild affection?

having ad's through a movie is bad but the idea of we'll return in half-hour after the news to watch the remainder of the movie.

    it's really annoying

RTE's timing for breaks is the worst. I think somone just hits a button after a certain amount of time, without actually waiting for a scene-change.
One I remember was the blues brothers; the cop's line is
    "Boys, you in biiig trouble"
    but on RTE we got
"Boys, you---" aero, aero, aero, aero.

    ARAGH!!!!!!!!

While RTE may have a bit to learn about timing, they can't be blamed for cuts in films. The guy who for many years was their film buyer retired a year or two ago, and I remember reading an interview with him in which he said that he'd told his bosses years previously that if they ever cut a single film he'd quit. Apparently they were quite happy to agree to his demand as he often got big films for RTE ahead of BBC or ITV. The station said that they would stick to the policy "imposed" on them as they believed that viewers preferred to watch unedited films.

ITV, on the other hand, appear to be run by religious fundamentalist, such is their determination that our sensitive ears would never hear the word "f*ck" in a film. They either cut scenes or dub bad language. How thoughtful...

Tv producers have a serious problem with the Predator films. 3 examples of worst timing ever :

    3. Predator 2 - Injects himself with steroids. About to scream his head off when the editing team decide to cut in.

    2. In the middle of a fight in the meat freezing room, the adds role only to return and removing about a minute of time from the film.

    1. Arnie covered in mud. Predator can kill him but walks away. Why? Arnie explains everything; He couldnt see me because STOP!!!!! That is by far the worst time evere a film was interrupted.

I reckon it was ITV. It was a great idea they had to take the news earlier/later/whatever and show the film as a continuous piece. But, lo and behold the news wasn't getting enough ratings so guess what they do? Yup, the fuktards go and put it back in the middle of the film.

As for RTE, I'm convinced that those gobsh!tes who cut into the plot willy-nilly are looking at Channel 4 or something

TV3's ads,m although reasonably placed, are long enough to lose track of what's goin on, or simply lose interest and change the channel.

    It is what it's.
