Its recommendation time. I'm looking for some Japanese movies along the same vein as Ichi the killer and Battle Royale. Bear in mind that I found The story of Ricky and Versus to be pretty much zhit.

You cant really go too far wrong with Takeshi Kitano's films.

    Hana-Bi
    Boiling Point
    Sonatine
    Brother
    Violent Cop

If you liked Ichi then you should check other films by Takashi Miike, Adnans already listed Audition and Dead or Alive. Sky Movie Max usually shows DoA or DoA2 also City of Lost Souls.

If you want to go Hong Kong, I recommend Hard Boiled and The Killer.

I saw Dead or Alive and Hana-Bi recently, both are well worth a look.

Ok, well try Audition, as every is reconmending.
    It is indeed good.

The Eye, while not Japanese, is also brilliant.
If you liked Ring, then see it.

Those Japanese Godzilla movies from the 60s are pretty humourous in a bad sort of way...

Tampopo. Crazy comedy/western giving great insight into japanese culture and customs. Fantastic movie.

edit: Errr, not exactly similar to Battle Royale or anything else mentioned in the thread, but just popped to mind with mention of great japanese films.

    Seven Samurai
    The best

Not in the same style as those you mentioned, and not even Japanese...

Jet Li's Hero is well worth a watch if you can find a copy. You can import a good Region 3 double disc that has English subtitles. Even the extras are subbed into English.

    Spirited Away

Oh, you can include anime? Forget Godzilla! Spirited Away is an excellent movie. Studio Ghibli's film before 'Away', Princess Mononoke (in my opinion) is even better. Castle in the Sky, Grave of the Fireflies, and Kiki's Delivery Service are also great movies by the same company. I've been a fan of Miyasaki-san and co. for the last three years and they're just simply incredible, still pushing the boundaries of animation even through this modern age of technology advancement.

Just saw Versus the other day myself.

Fantastic. Puts the matrix to shame, and adds in gore, zombies, and some very large guns.

    What's not to like?:)

Seven Samurai is Japanese and puts every movie mentioned here so far to shame.
Only saw it last month and is deffo one of my fav films

Princess Mononoke is definetly one of the greatest films ever made. Any fan of Fantasy, or Anime must see it.

Wings of Honneamise is one of the best anime films ever. It's Gainax's first film (they also did Neon Genesis Evangelion). It's not like other anime films, it's got a much slower pace. However stick with it to the end and it will be well worth it. The animation is amazing and way ahead of it's time. I came out a year before Akira and yet has far better animation.

It's got a very original storyline. It's set in an alternative universe were man is about to take his first steps into space. But the space programme is in a lot of trouble mainly because of disinterested staff, a low budget and it's government which is looking for any excuse to start a war with a neghbouring country. I saw a copy of it in Forbidden Planet if anyone is interested. You should get it if you like arthouse films and want to see a film that is truely original.

    heh, Project A.K.O ;)

But seriously; I enjoyed the Macross Plus movie, and most of the others mentioned above like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away (it's showing unrestricted in the IFI till october, see it!!).

The Hidden Fortress is a great film, mainly because it was a bit more lighthearted than a lot of kurosawas other work, which tended to be dark and pretty heavy on the old misery and death...ie: Throne of Blood is an adaptation of Macbeth...er I mean, the scottish play ;). George Lucas loosely based Star Wars on The Hidden Fortress; with C3P0 and R2D2 taking the place of the two army deserters, luke skywalker standing in for the general out to rescue the kidnapped princess (yes, leia).

People harp on about how great battle royale was, I think of it more as a novelty film..I was definatly blown away the first time I saw it, but in no way does it stand up to repeat viewing. It is a uniquely Japanese film though, could you see hollywood.. or anyone else for that matter.. making anything approaching it? By the way, the director of BR, Kinji Fukasaku, passed away whilst working on Battle Royale II. His son, Kenta, finished off the film. It looks like he rushed it, BRII is going to be godawful.

Battle Royale 2 looks amazing. Its supposed to be starting with the survivor of the first Battle Royale leading a small army. They start blowing up buildings or something. Advanced word is suppoed to be good.

    Akira Kurusowas films are excellent,

People have already mentioned The Seven Samurai, Check out Yojimbo and Sanjuro for similar stuff.

These movies provided the inspiration for The Magnificent Seven, and Clint Eastwoods charachter in A Fistfull of Dollars and A Few Dollars more

Actually it went both ways; Kurosawa originally took some inspiration from early hollywood westerns, since they would have been very popular at the time, when setting out to make his samurai epics.

Consequently hollywood remade some of kurosawas movies as westerns :)
