Its damned near impossible. My girlfriend lives in the states and im trying to get a work visa so i can live over there. I cant afford to be jetting over there all the time. Even if you want to work only for a year you pretty much have to apply for the regular greencard/Visa . if you applied now you'd get word back on if you made it this time next year and they would let you into the country in 2005.
If you are a student you could try a J1 work visa. There are 6 month work visas available but they are only given to people who are transfered from company branch to company branch.
You "COULD" try and find a woman in the states thats willing to marry you , that makes things a little easier for getting a visa but even then that takes more than seven months.
There are plenty of sites out there that make the visa application easy, www.usais.org is what i use. it costs about 35€ for a once off application. the DV Visa is what you are after

I'm currently in Boston on a J1 and fly home tomorrow evening. I'd love to return here and work for a few years.

How do you go about getting a green card and up to how long can I stay in the USA with one. I was under the impression that once you had a green card you were free to come and go as you pleased having full citizenship in the states. Am I right or wrong?

    More info please.

a green card as far as i know isnt citizenship, it means you are still irish (eg.) but you can work in the states. you can apply for citizenship which means you are then american and have certain rights etc

Isn't there a Green Card lottery?

Clearly there isn't much of a chance but anything is worth trying.
