All i want is a Dsl Modem. I don't need a router or anything. No networks just pure laptop.

I see one in Marx for 70 quid. That is all I need. Just a USB modem to do the Job.

    Anyone against this?

I had this modem before upgrading to the 4 port router / switch, setup can be a bit niggly and it doesnt like when you mess with the usb ports but once its up and running it works grand.

I think Marx sell and internal DSL modem for less and that might do the trick for you too.

If you have any issues feel free to DM me or Zascar who i sold the modem too for help.

Theres more info on modems in this thread.

I read from someone else on this forum (or maybe the nets/comms one ages ago) to avoid internal DSL modems like the bubonic plague........ because if your computer crashes and you need to reboot, the connection doesnt reset or something and you have to ring eircom to get them to shut it off from their end (or you can't reconnect).

Although it might not be this way for ALL internals....

Anyway didn't you say you were using a laptop?

Oh I would never buy an internal modem...its for a laptop so I will be buying an external modem.

I'll just go for the 70 euro one from Marx or 86 euro one from Elara. I have dealt with Elara before and found them excellent.!

If the laptop has an ethernet port you'd be much better off buying one of those external ethernet router/firewall/hub boxes. About twice the price, but much more flexible in the long term.

    No ethernet. Just USB.
