If you have almost any kind of PCI (internal) Satellite card in your PC you can get this worthwhile Totally Free service.

    Sat@Once newsletter number 39 (ENGLISH)
    =======================================

    IMPORTANT for new users
When you have a beginners' problem, please consult the self-support
forums (see below) and post your questions there before sending emails
to us. Sat@Once is a free service, we are a very small team and cannot
personnaly do support to our 60.000+ users.

You are today more than 60.600 registered users of Sat@Once on
    <csp.it> and <tudor.lu> and IPviaSky.

Last week we collected more than 290 new users a day, which is almost
3 times the daily average until now. We are probably by audience the
largest European satellite service, either commercial or research. We
are grateful for your support, and grateful also to SES-ASTRA and the
European Space Agency for their generous funding.

Sat@Once is becoming a real community
The power of the Internet is that users help one another to develop a
common interest. Today, we are proud to count at least 4 faithful and
regular supporters for Sat@Once, independent of our team.

    - First in time was Thomasino, from Czech Republic
<http://www.dvbmysteria.com/>. Thomasino created a tool ("PriFIS") to
help users take advantage of the newscasting and receive files they
request by satellite. He also has a discussion and help forum in
    Czech.

    - Second in creativity is UdarTeam
    <http://www.udarteam1.republika.pl/en/aw.htm>. They provide you a
software tool to consult the Sat@Once transmission announcement to
know in advance what contents are coming.

    - Last but not least, IPviaSky from Berlin <http://www.ipviasky.com>
maintains a discussion and help forum in German and English for
Sat@Once users. They also offer friendly support for users of TDSL-via
    Sat.

    - and our thanks to the user Oliver Huf, who volunteered to translate
    in German our newsletter.

When you have a beginners' problem, please consult these forums and
post your questions there before sending emails to us. We are a very
small team and cannot personnaly do support to our 60.000+ users.

    Contents available through Sat@Once
The recent split of webcasters last week was an important step in the
life of Sat@Once. Think about it: you are now receiving, on the German
webcaster alone, more contents than what you had in the whole
transmission last year at the same time, for all Europe.

    Today we are sending
    - on Sat@Once Europe: 39 web sites, 48 newsgroups, 10 mailing lists
    - on Sat@Once Germany: 33 web sites, 8 newsgroups, 0 mailing lists
    - on Sat@Once Italy: 43 web sites, 23 newsgroups, 0 mailing lists

This achievement is a result of your efforts to make Sat@Once known
and used, which has convinced ESA and ASTRA to continue to sponsor us.
Thank you. Please help us attract more users to convince the
    advertising sponsors to come also.

What time of day do the transmissions begin?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

They seem to run all the time, though sometimes there seems a break on Saturday mornings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭CivilServant

True, I eventually set it up properly and downloaded nothing but turd at lightning speeds! Did you ever get anything good for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Yes!

    Do voting

make sure you only select English

    Newsgroups
    CIA factbook
    most of Lyngsat
    Hires Cinema Trailers
    Various Shareware/Freeware programs (Multimedia Downloads).
    Sci Amer
    CNN
    News.com
    etc

Apparently they will have a "nice surprise" in May.

The more people using it the better it gets. And it is free.

Think of it as an enormous Teletext/BBC/Sky Interactive transmission rather than ordinary Internet.

As they get more users, they can justify more bandwidth and more content and more specialised "catchers" (now 4 I think instead of one), since it is pure broadcast, not 1:1.

    From Letter 51

Vote to get the most of Casablanca
Today Sat@Once is sending 218 different contents, 136 web sites, 72
newsgroups and 10 mailing lists, in many European languages.
If you want to catch them all, you need to reserve more than 20 GB :-) and
your Windows File Explorer will be very happy :-( We are working hard on a
solution to solve this inconvenience but it is better to have too much to
choose from than too little, don't you think so?

The best way to benefit from this free service is to allocate a reasonable
amount (say 1-2 GB) and "vote" using the Favorites page to select exactly
what you prefer. When you vote, we recommand that you don't try to fill
completely your cache with votes because the size of the contents may vary
day after day. Also, when there is space left on your cache, you may receive
    surprise contents.

It would be great if you could get newsgroup binaries. I'm not completly sure how the voting works. There doesn't seem to be much english material there. The biggest decent thing I got was the entire lonelyplanet website (which might be useful at a later date).

I want hires trailers!! :D What's on Lyngsat? I left it on for about an hour and dled 2 gigs which is pretty good going, by anyones standards. How long do you leave it on for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Select "empty cache"

    Vote again.

Sometimes I leave it on overnight, with screen off the electric is not much :-)

Also you can request programmes /binaries at newsgroup once.csp.it

    No Warez or ripoffs etc.

The once.csp.it newsgroup can be "voted for" You may get the requested thing.

I.e. via broadband I can post binaries to once.csp.it (only as a reply post). Everyone gets it via Casablanca.

Read up on the Netiquette etc as to how this works.
