utv bb - no static ip possible in Republic

    Guys,

I got utv's bb solution (ClickSilver) in the last month on the understanding that I would be able to get a static ip from utv. This was the deciding factor in my going with utv as I need a static ip to manage remote firewalls.

I rang utv recently to discuss getting my static ip only to be told by Brian that "unfortunately we are unable to assign static ip addresses to the clicksilver service in the Republic of Ireland"

I gotta say this is really infuriating.

    Tom

Netsource supply static IP's as standard (ooooooops should I mention them?) and they are also resellers of the RADSL service.

Therefore it is technically feasible . Get back onto UTV .

So what you are saying Muck is that there is no _external_ technical reason why utv can't allot static ips.

There may well be internal technical reasons.

On another note - I assume the faq on their site has been updated to reflect the fact that static ips are not available? I'm off now to check!

    Hmmm,

    utv specifically say:
" Can I get a fixed IP address?
Yes, you can purchase one fixed IP address for €5 per month."
    on the following faq page:http://u.tv/support/ans.asp?id=451&category=broadband&region=ie

    Is this false advertising?

Well, technically it's against RIPE regulations to 'sell' IP addresses, so the 5€ has to be an 'administration' charge.

Martin Lyons, that is, Technical Director, UTVi. You'll get him at martin@u.tv or 048 90818504. Complain loudly about this. It's simply unacceptable to advertise a service and then say you cannot provide it.

    This is a UTV problem.
This is not an Eircom problem.
It is not false advertising (as it is on their own website) but it IS false promotion as the ASAI understand it.

My sympathies at the time and effort you wasted because UTV have false information on their web page. You could ask them about ISDN Multilink in FRIACO while you are at them to get their website fixed.

    1. Does UTV support multilink (128K) in FRIACO
    2. Does it use your allowance twice as fast (it should) or is the second c hannel always chareged at per minute

    Tomk,

love it - thanks for the mail address - a mai has gone off.

Muck, good response - unfortunately I have already shelled out for my own ethernet adsl modem and a router for my home lan.

I don't want to have to shell out again for isdn equipment if I can avoid it.

Not what I meant, it was a question about another (ambiguity shall we say) on the UTV website and I wanted you to get that clarified as well.

Emailed a query to Martin Lyons, that is, Technical Director, UTVi, as per tomk's suggestion on the 4th of September.

I have still to hear back from him!

    Yeah for UTV's customer support.
