Whats the story with UTV BB; You have 2 change ur telephony to them and it costs less than the eircom service??? (plus u pay for eircon's line rental)

I've a check in hand ready for UTV BB but I'm having second thoughts. First off I've a home network setup already, what do I need in regards to ethrenet modem and DSL switch?

Also I'm doubious about the whole 12mth contract.

Is it possible that my phone bill could work out more expensive than what I'm being ripped off already by Eircon?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Also where can I buy the (cost efficient) hardware for the most reasnoable price without loosing much line quality?

UTV's telephony service has been around a good while, and is a proven cost saver compared to Eircom. Check out their rates here.

The only way you can avoid paying Eircom line rental is if you're lucky enough to be in an Esat BB enabled area. If this is for you, you will pay around twice as much per month for a considerably better service.

I also have a home network, but I'm currently short of cash for modems/routers/etc, so I got the UTV ZyXEL modem and I've set up a Win98 router to share it out. Try Elara for a good range of DSL gear - there are plenty of other suppliers too.

Not much you can do about the 12 month contract, except change supplier - I think Netsource are the only ones who do a shorter one, but I'm open to correction.

In my experience, once your line is enabled you don't need to worry about line quality. I've plugged my modem into various extension sockets around the house, some "professionally" installed by €ircon, some equally efficiently by an amateur (me), and the connection has been fine.

Do clarify this, not all ESAT Business ADSL Connections are fully unbundled so you could have ESAT business aADSL and Eircom line rental.

I changed my calls to UTV and my call charges are approx. half what they used to be. Mainly because their call setup fee is much cheaper than eircom's minimum call charge and their flat rate dial up internet rates.

Thanks, michaelanthony for the info and tomk thanks 4 the website! I'll prob take the leap to BB now in confidence.

Also please advise : will this D-Link ADSL Ethernet Modem work with one of the following :

    Broadband (DSL/Cable) Router, 4 x 10/100 Switch
    Netgear RP614 Broadband Router + 4 port 10/100 Switch
    D-Link DI-704P 4-Port Broadband Router

Or maybe one of those routers has a modem installed... ?!?

Yeah, the modem will work with any of those, and none of them have a modem built in.

Is there a particular reason you want a separate modem? You could get the D-Link DSL-504, with modem, router, and switch all in one box, for less than a separate modem and router.
