This was raised a while ago on a different forum website, but it was quiet interesting. Considering that the Empire is the rule of government, attacks again the Empire would be considered terrorism, so Luke's attack on the Death Star would have been considered a terrorist act.

Also is the point that about 30 million people were on the Death Star at the time, many of whom would have been non-combatants (guys cleaning toliets or maintaning the lifts). What is your take on this :)

    Terrorist is a bit extreme
Would you consider the overthrow of the Taliban government in Afgahan... an act of terrorism, think not
Just because you are in goverment does not make all acts against you an act of terrorism.

The 31M folk on the death star were an army, and as such accept the possibility of death. An army engineer fixing a tank is a legit target.

    Anyhow, remember Alderran??
Couldn't afford that again and remember the Death Star was homing in for the kill again until Luke - the wuss - got lucky

Imagine the front page of the Holonet News.

    Breaking News...

EVIL ACT OF TERRORISM AGAINST EMPIRE

Today just a matter of hours ago, the worst act of terrorism occured in the galaxy. The terrorist group known as the 'rebel alliance' carried out their callous act on, an new Imperial space station located in the Yavin sector. Survivers of the attack seem to be few, but it's believe that the courageous leader - Darth Vader escaped the blast. Senior members of the Emperor council are believed to have been killed. The station is believed to have been in the area after carrying out a resecue mission, on the recent terrorist attack on the planet Alderran.

The station, a prototype used by the military, was expected to have a crew of about 30 million. Senior members of the former Senate have condemed the attack.

Someone who attacks a government is not necessarily a terrorist. A terrorist is someone who uses acts of terror against someone else, such as blowing up innocent civilians. Since the death Star was a military instillation it was a ligitimat military target and any one aboard is also a ligitimat target. So Lukes attack on the Death Star was a proper military attack carried out by a rebel.

oh i gotta hand it to you bloggs i havent laughed like that in quiet a while well done i found that really funny,

to answer your question in a sence yes he did attack a goverment installation and luke did join the rebal allicance so it could have been an act of terror from the governments point of view

however he might have killed a few innocent civ's working on the death star but as the rest of the guys have said it was a military target and therefore doesnt really count i imagine all the silly little day to day jobs were done by droids anyway the only living people on the station were part of the army anyway

and another thing the rebals were at war anyway with the empire and they were trying to free the galaxy so from there point of view it wasnt an act of terror

I dont think it was an act of terror they were trying to do the right thing after all.

well the rebels were obviously doing the right thing, but the fact is the ordinary citizen of the empire would view it as a terrorist attack.

It the Rogue Squadron books, there is a part in which members of Rogue Squadron visit a museum on Coruscant to do some scouting. It tells how the empire related the news of the death stars to the public. Basically the stations were supposed to be large mining stations. The laser was supposed to be used to break up large asteroids. Of course the Emporer was a hero who was tragically murdered after trying to make peace with the evil rebels.

As for terrorist because of fighting the government, maybe or maybe not from a certain point of view:) I'm sure the English thought the Americans were terrorists when they were trying to gain independence etc.

As for Luke attacking the station with innocents on board. I don't think there were many innocents on board the first death star, would the imperial navy trust non navy personnel to run their station? For the second death star however there were a lot of slave labourers still building the station. But that was a trap for the rebels. The Emperor planned that battle, he's the one to blame for any innocent deaths.

The Empire deserved it. They had weapons of mass destruction after all :)

yea you'd think that if they were going to build a big giant death ray they'd hide it someplace other than a mining facility :D
