Spain's average wage is 15,000 euro per annum. Here's it supposed to be around 26,000. I guess that makes it more probable that we're are going to pay more. Since we're near the top of the scale... price won't keep going up like this for too much longer... otherwise prices will have to play a waiting game while we re-adjust downwards or inflation forces the rest of Europe to catch up.

not everyone is on 26000. I'm below that and Im a tech for 4 yrs!!

the average isn't a very good representation of typical wages, because we've a larger gap between the people on big money, and the people on **** money like me, than most countries. Although then we have that upper tax band so that's probably why I guess. Bet they don;t pay so much income tax in Spain.

    sorry m8 4 delay

im a manuf. technician. if it was for shift allowance id be in tescos. its cut-backs after cut-backs, and now i have to take a 33% reduction in wages because we're all going off shift. Went to college for 4 yrs and bringing home less wages as a labourer now!!

    Seriously thinking of Australia now!!!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

In Spain last week. Filled up shopping trolley in Spanish supermarket (Consum). This is not the cheapest place around by far over there. Mainly food and also a lot of water, fizzy drinks and alcohol. Paid €49 at check out. I reckon that would have come to about €200 in any Irish supermarket (a bit less in Lidl/Aldi)

I'm emmigrating to Spain next week to earn 3 times as much and pay 2.5 times less. I've had enough of daily bs in Dublin. Sitting in traffic, paying a fiver for a pint and generally getting shafted at every turn. Hasta la vista.

    :)

EUR 2.70 for a 2L bottle of coke? Where are you paying that? In the Centra beside us, it's 2.15, and in Dunnes it's 1.60. Part of the problem with the majority of these ripoff comparisons is that they take the cheapest place in other countries and compare it with the most expensive price here.

If you're going to claim Ireland's a ripoff, at least specify where you have seen the price. I'm not denying that it's a ripoff for many things, but if you're doing your shopping in the 24-hour garage, you're going to have to expect some gouging.

Just to keep up the Spanish comparison, I paid 600 pesetas for a bottle of beer in a Barcelona nightclub about four years ago, not a kick in the arse away from what it was here at the time. In San Sebastian last year, I was paying a Euro for a shot of beer (about the size of half a glass of wine) in pintxo bars. OMG RipOff Spain!

Shafted by the bastard corporations? Me too. Havent had a pay rise in 3 years... Corporations are evil, they are the most unethical people out there... the government is just a big corporation too though.

My wages didnt go up like inflation... And they wont recognise trade unions... thanks government for ensuring the workers can get shafted.

Costa del Sol 2 years ago... 1euro for a longneck bottle of san miguel (local brew, but on sale here too)... in a PUB! You wouldnt see much change from a fiver for it over here.. 2euro for 2 pints of spanish lager (on special - two for 1). Ripoff Spain? Yeah right!

Well, I was being sarcastic, Wolfie. The Costa is wildly different in prices to the Basque country, and small villages in the middle of nowhere in Spain are cheaper than the tourist spots in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona. Many of the things people are complaining about here are really about RipOffDublin, or RipOffCertainShops, not Ireland in general. When we're complaining about spending a fiver for a pint of beer (and we rightly should be), it isn't that price in every pub, just certain 'classy' joints in Dublin.

Just back from Madrid. Most places have a fixed price daytime menu (Menu del Dia). Here's one example I had:

3 course meal : home made spring roles, veal escallope, creme brule, basket of bread, side salad etc., coffee, and a bottle, not a glass, but a bottle of very nice wine.

    The Price?

    €8.50

And a hell of a lot nicer than most of the slop that passes for food in our restaurants.

    K.
