Odd problems with ICS

An odd problem has been bugging me with my systems of late. I'm running a small home network with UTV clicksilver at the moment. This is connected into one PC via USB and then shared out with ICS. The main PC is w2k and the rest are either w2k or 98se. Internet connectivity is grand for all machines until you try and send an email from the client PCs. Then the SMTP seems to time out for some reason. A similar problem seems to occur when posting to online boards.

I've tried Kerio and sygate firewalls but I'm getting the same problems with both. Anyone any suggestions as to what I've made a hames of?

firstly install the latest kerio beta

    Best firewall ever.

Secondly open up said e-mail program on client and main computer and do the following (this is based on Outlook expresss...)

Click on Tools>Accounts. then click on Mail tab. Here open up your e-mail account. Under Servers make sure same info is there on main and client computers, if it ain't move the info from main to client. Under "Connection" on client is set to Lan and under Advnaced make sreu your use default ports, 25 adn 110

Thanks for the pointers but so far no joy. All the settings (in both OE and Outlook) were correct but still nothing. I'll try the link you put up for kerio (seems to more up to date than the one I'm using) and see if that makes a difference.

I have the solution to your common problem. This has nothing to do with firewalls or ICS, presuming that you can recieve but not send emails

In your email account settings you need to change your outgoing/smtp server to 'smtp.utvinternet.com'.

To do this in Outlook Express go to Tools -> Accounts
then select the Mail tab, then double click on the email account you are having problems with and the settings box appears, in this select the Servers tab and you just replace the Outgoing mail with 'smtp.utvinternet.com'.
    - no other settings need be changed and your mail account will work the same as it did before

Receiving works fine. Sending works if the mail is very small (ususlly just a subject line or one line of text) but any normal sized mail won't make it. Also posting to boards or similar sites doesn't work. The main PC is fine for all of these though

I've tried setting the SMTP to UTVs settings as well but with no more luck unfortunately.

It all has me more than a little puzzled :-(

    And suddenly it works!

The new kerio seems to have done the job. Many thanks for the pointer Mutant_Fruit

glad to help. i know with an older beta of kerio it blocked port 27014 or something similar. that was needed by counter-strike to register with the anti-cheat servers... so basically ihad to disable my firewall while i played CS. thats what gave me the idea. Thankfully that was fixed in the next Beta, after i e-mailed em. :D
