Obviously Bangkok is probably where you will start. I was in Thailand last year and loved it. Most people I knew said only stay a day or two but we stayed for a week and toured around using Bangkok as a base. Pat Pong (Red Light District) is interesting at night but watch yourself - don't let yourself be pulled into one of the dodgy clubs. Chinatown is fantastic during the day. 99% are friendly and welcoming. Get a pass for the monorail and travel all over. Enjoy a river boat trip through the side canals.
One trip we went on wasn't worth it was to the floating market a real dissapointment.
Go see the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaeo
Watch for the gem shops that you get pulled into by taxi men
    LonelyPlaney website has great advice.
The fruits are great, the manosteens especially
Also went to Koh Samui to rest for two weeks, but 1 week would have been more than enough. A great bar is the "Bare Foot bar" on Chaweng beach
Also the food from the stalls is delicious (neither of us got ill) but do use your own commonsense.

    Thailand is a cool country..
Bangkok is cool, Most travellers stay on a street called Khao San
It's buzzing at night.. great spot..
Up North you have the jungles, and jungle trekking.. v.enjoyable
Down south you have the Islands..
    Phuket - very commercialised
    Ko Samui - less commercialised
Ko Pagnagn - not too commercial - great full moon party.

Harry, can you recommend some accomodation on Khao San?

    Backpacker budget naturally!

    Take a look on www.asia-hotels.com
I've used them a couple of times, they're pretty good imo.

New Siam 1 about 5 minutes from Khao San Rd is pretty good.Clean, secure, cheap, and away from the noise of the main strip.

When you walk down Khao San there's 100s of places, offering accomodation. I think they're all around the same standard (tiny dingy rooms with a fan) and price. I forget the name of the places I stayed in, but they were all similar as far as I could see..
