Recently RTÉ have started repeating the Reeling in the Years series and I have to say it's one of the best thing I've seen coming out of RTÉ. I can't put my finger on it maybe it's because i wasn't old enough to remember the events and it's interesting to see it.

Do RTÉ sell this series on DVD?

For RTE its a great programme. I missed most of it when they first showed it.

    Here's the site - http://www.rte.ie/tv/reelingintheyears/

Also see the FAQ, it says they wont be releasing it on DVD.

I was wondering this myself last night while watching 1987. I'm old enough to remember back to the news of the early 80s and I'd certainly buy this if they didn't do the dog on the retail price.

edit: after reading the FAQ (thanks celticfc) I suppose it makes sense that they can't. Every broadcasting operation has some broadcast rights on news clips. They wouldn't be able to clear the rights for video/.DVD sale without paying through the nose. I'll record it in some "better than videotape" format next time it's on.

ah that's a shame, Well I hope they play it all again soon so maybe someone can copy it.

Pity about it not being available on DVD or Video.
Though, I can understand why after reading their site notice.

If I had of known that a few weeks ago, I would have taped the whole series :(

Ah well, roll on the re-runs !

Wouldn't the rights just disappear after a couple of years I mean it is mainly old news reals are they not considered History and thus we have the right to see them when ever we want without having to pay for that privildge?

Would they not just re edit the show without any non RTE pictures.

Naw, doesn't work like that. They still have broadcast rights forever (as it's news) but the copyright is held by the rights holder for the guts of a century. It's because of this that stuff like "World War one in Colour" is only coming out now with an emphasis on DVD - and that was probably far easier with the (presumably) prominence of Pathé newsreels in the archive (only one rights holder to deal with). Clearing the sale rights on this show would be a nightmare.

I suppose they feel that it would spoil the show. I'm willing to bet that even some of the Irish footage was done by non-RTE employees and hence they don't even control all the copyright on that (again they probably have broadcast rights only). Probably not most of it but it's more hassle on the pile.

It's a shame in its own way that they didn't originally do the show with a view to selling it in shops. They could have cleared some of the music, used it, cleared a limited number of clips that they didn't own and could have done the whole thing with no hassle in selling it. We'd never have known the difference. I'll bet they've had quite a few queries though, given that they got around to doing the FAQ.

It is a damn shame it's not available to buy on DVD but when you understand what they would have to do and pay to get rights you can understand why.

I don't think that if they done a show where they only used RTÉ footage it would be as good as it is now could loose the world context and as sceptre says the probably don't own the rights to all of they Irish stuff either.

I did, I had heard of him doing it before but never seen any pictures and i was griped when the started to show it.

Sorry, but no. We've had a lot of interest in the idea of a 'boxed set' of 'Reeling In The Years' and we've looked into the feasibility of it, but the issues of copyright ownership and fees make it impossible. Firstly, RTE doesn't own the copyright control on a lot of the material in the programme. We think it's essential to include international events in order to give a context to what was going on in Ireland, and so we buy in clips of foreign stories from other companies. ITN, BBC, Associated Press, etc., charge several hundred pounds per minute per transmission of their footage, never mind video rights, and if we wanted to keep their material in a video, that video would then be extremely expensive! Secondly, with regard to much of the material in the rest of the show, RTE only has 'broadcast clearance' as opposed to 'video clearance', and selling the programmes on video would entail a massive series of negotiations with record companies (permissions and payments for music), production companies (the various film clips and ads), as well as individuals who've given us their own material, etc. What you're then looking at is a legal minefield of permissions, consents and contracts. RTE does issue videos of its programmes, but those programmes are covered by contracts that include video rights. 'Reeling In The Years' doesn't have that cover. To put the matter bluntly, we'd have to pay a fortune to release the show as it stands. So then, we looked at the alternative. The alternative is to cut a load of relevant stuff out and change some of the music in the programme, which we just wouldn't want to do because .....well, because the programme would only be half as good then, it wouldn't be anything like the shows that went out on air, and we'd end up disappointing people.

Makes sence why they cant make a DvD of it. I would have probably bought it for one. Really is the best thing to come out of RTÉ is the past 40 years. Its rare anythign god ever comes out of RTÉ.

.Its rare anythign god ever comes out of RTÉ.
Fair City(longest running soap), Glenn Roe, The Late Late Show(longest running chatshow hosted by the same person), The Sunday Game(only sports show available on the GAA) , The Lotto(one of the first in the world), Prime Time, that fictional series on some guy fighting in a flying colume, that candid camera yolk that gaybo was on in 1985 in reeling in the years
RTE also sponsored the making of Some Mothers Son, The Matchmaker, Bloody Sunday, that one based up in Donegal where the men put an ad in an American paper looking for a wife

RTE do very well with a pretty sh*t budget. Sure they could just buy international success like TV3 but no they are dedicated to producing native origional masterpieces!!

I never understood why Ian Paisley did that, I mean is he that ignorant that he does realise that most counties that are part of the EU are Catholic Countries. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Ireland (Oh wait he part of that country, hmmmmm ):D

They could just bring our a Reeling In The Year's music CD.

Are they going to do the 1960?

I thought they would as its RTE's 40th.
