Broadband for gameing

    Hi,
I have 3 machines in my house I want to use for Internet gaming. I'm not sure what kind of bandwidth is required for gaming, and I’m looking for advice on what service carrier to choose. IOL cap at 5mb per month (how heavy on data is gaming?), Netsource don't cap. Does anyone know how good the ping rate with these companies? Is 0.5 mb enough to share between 3 machines or will I need more lines?

    Any advice welcome!

512k is probably enough for online gaming, even with 3 computers connected to it. However, if anyone starts downloading on one of the machines while the other 2 are playing games, then pings will be adversely affected. Also, will these 3 computers be used on a regular basis? If so, then it would be pretty easy for 3 simultaneous users to go over a 5 or 6 gig cap in one month, so maybe a cap-less offering is for you.

    Hi,
These computers would only be used for gameing. Maybe mail also, but no heavy downloading. My major concern is maintaining a ping rate suitable enough for gameing.
For online gameing, if you have only 1 ip can you actualy split the line to more than 1 pc?

If you can afford it get an esat buisness line 512k/256k for e90 a month, no cap and low low pings. That would be enough for 3 pcs also.

    Hi,
Is the esat lin better quality than the others? I didn't realise they would vary much.
    Thanks for all the replies.

That package is only available from the few esat owned exchanges, but it is definitely the best option for gaming. You may be lucky and be near such an exchange, but otherwise you best bet for good solid pings is eircom or iol.

Alternatively, you could look at a wireless connection. Don't know much about what's available from them myself.

IF you can get Busness Iol offering that would be best but cost alot though 100 euro or so a month  and only a small number of exchanges offer it

But its better pings and no cap so no worrying

Dont get netsource anyway your ping will be awful

Irish Broadband have finally fixed up their ping problems about 2-3 weeks ago, now everything is hunky dorey, and i can get regular in game pings of under 70ms. in a friends clan server i can average 45ms.

and also your "l33t" CS config.

Im amazed at the speeds some of you ISDN'ers get.

512 should be good for gaming. Battlefield for example just needs a minimum of 4kb/s stream for each player.

Also, your forrgetting how much gamers download. all those nice big updates every month .... christ. Ive about 400mb of updates waiting to be download. Divide that by my loverly download rate of 4kb/s and its gonna take longer then a month :(

Chirst i need BB. Looking at going the IOL option too :)

    Simply..Yes.
Esat Business use an algorithim which is called fastpath (or interleaving off) which improves ping times (what all us gamers want) by minimising excess data. The average ping (dos) that i've seen on Esat Business is about 20-25ms (half that of ISDN ish). Its also uncapped so if 3 of you paying for it it should be too much of a burden. Its €110 a month tho but its contention is low)er?) @ 24:1 and is uncapped. (like Netsource but less chance that contention affects it, especially at night as its a business product)

Getting it installed on Monday so can let you know more then, however theres a long wait in getting it (over a month for me so far) and only available from 40ish exchanges around the country.

Any other questions please feel free to ask

ISDN doesn't have interleaving enabled. DSL does, as it reduces line errors and increases connectivity distances from the exchange.Interleaving is a huge factor in ADSL latency, the other being the contention ratios.

i did say UNDER 70, not 70. I can get pings of between 30-50 on my friends irish clanserver, which unfortunatly is only irish server on my list. Then the UK2 brand of servers are my uk servers, and everyone knows they've gond down the crapper in recent times... Jolt can be dodgy sometimes, but 95% of the time i can get pings of averaging 60-ish. If anyone has better server ip's feel free to pm em to me so i can give more accurate ingame results on good servers.
