IOLBB's faq page has been changed - read this:

"Is there going to be a data transfer limit?
You will be entitled to free transfer of up to 5 Gigabytes of data in any given month. If you go over this limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB)

This data allowance is calculated on a daily basis and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account."

This seems to indicate that they are no longer only counting download for the cap!

They always did count both directions did they not?

This though "data allowance is calculated on a daily basis" is interesting. Does that mean they calculate your dowload per day [which would work out at 170mb or so per day] insted of just totalling it at the end of the month?

I think the daily bit just refers to the fact that http://broadband.iol.ie/usage is only updated once daily (at midnight). This is backed up by the fact that mine greets me with "At your current rate of usage you are likely
to go over your download limit in 2 days" or so after a large download.

As regards always counting both directions, we (IOL customes/boards members/both/all of the above) could never really get a straight answer out of them about it and their previous FAQ on the subject seemed to eer on the side of the download onlyers - and the usage monitor still does too (notice it says "over your download limit in 2 days" rather than "over your data transfer limit in 2 days").

just look dont worry.. ffs they mean download.. look at your usage monitor when u go over the 5gb limit.. it goes red and it ses 'you have gone over ure mothly allowance' or something like that meaning only ure download is counted.. and if its not.. you can always bitch and complain to esat that you have been mislead.. in which case that would be every single esat customer..

    Regards,
    -Coz.

we really need to find out if its only down or both up and down

If its up and down i have around 3 gig done ..If only download i have 2,02 gig big difference

so this still hasnt been resolved...i thought that we settled on 5Gb download in a previous thread, about a month ago...remember bizmark ?(congrats on the job dude)
im nowhere near the limit (i've been away for a while), but if its calculated on a daily basis we're basically back to square one.

if they say transfer, they mean transfer, meaning if you upload that counts. if they say download, they mean download, so only download counts.

    They said transfer

where does it say transfer, as opposed to d/l?
    is that the new wording?

Yes, that is the new wording, it now says transfer in the Questions section of the IOL Broadband web site.

As above (see top), the relevent section reads:

"Is there going to be a data transfer limit?
You will be entitled to free transfer of up to 5 Gigabytes of data in any given month. If you go over this limit then we reserve the right to charge you for any additional data (at 3cent inc VAT per MB)

This data allowance is calculated on a daily basis and if you are consistently above this amount we reserve the right to suspend or permanently disconnect your account."

Well, my guess is that after all the calls for clarification of the 5GB d/l they decided to make it a bit murkier - "transfer" implying both d/l and u/l - but now you're in a grey area coz the word transfer can be made to mean many things.
with "5GB download" the specs were clear, technically speaking, but now they have much more room for interpretation (ie they can spin it anyway it suits them).
But would that apply, legally speaking, to the old wording on the contract?

It would be my guess that the contract has words to the effect of something like "these terms can be changed at any time at the discretion of IOL and/or EsatBT".
