IOL connection working through router but unable to browse

I have been playing with my Speedtouch 510 V4 and I have successfully configured a PPPoE connection to IOL. The connection looks good and I have a solid green light on my router indicating a connection. The problem is that I can't browse the internet from my PC. I suspect that this is an ethernet card and router issue as opposed to a problem with my connection. Has anyone else encountered this with their routers? What can I do to sort this out?

Have you configured you internet browser properly?

    In IE
Tools-Internet options...-Connections- Lan settings- and a tick in "Automatically detect settings"

    Close browser and try again.
    Can you ping www.boards.ie?

I am not sure if I have the "Automatically detect settings" option checked. I can ping the router, but not any external sites. I'll make sure I have that option set.

EDIT: Do I need to enter the IOL DNS servers?

I use eircoms rdsl and didn't have to input a DNS server address. Your router should sort all this out if its set up correctly, Internet Explorer then just detects its setings. So....
Your sure NAT is enabled? DMZ is disabled? DHCP is enabled? and all your user name/passwords etc are correct?

Was your router provided by Eircom? IOL don't support my router so I have to configure everything manually. I am sure that there is an option thats not set somewhere that I have to set. I am learning as I go. DHCP is enabled, and I have gone with the default NAT config. I am not sure if the DNS addresses have to be keyed in manually for this type of config.

    Try pinging 217.114.166.147

If you can ping the IP then it definitely is a DNS problem. If you can't then something else is wrong

No Eircom didn't supply the router. Have you also configured the following with the correct settings?
    VPI =
    VCI =
    Encapsulation :
    Username
    Password
    Confirm password
    Authentication :
    Connect on demand :
    Idle time = 0

If you didn't get these from IOL you won't be able to connect. Someone with an IOL connection should be able to give you the correct settings.

There is only one thing from that list that I couldn't find and that was the Connection On Demand. Everything else was entered and my roter interface told me that the connection was made successfully.

If I can ping an IP address, I can enter the DNS servers and I'll be sorted. What road should I go down if I cant ping IP addresses? Is there a Ladybird guide to troubleshooting routers somewhere?

Can you ping other machines connected directly to the router?

There is only one other machine connected to the router, and thats the Xbox which obtains an IP address automatically. That said, I can detect the router from the Xbox.

I have done a little more work on this, and I can't get to the bottom of it. I have my Xbox and my PC going through my Speedtouch 510 V4. I have configured a PPPoE connection and it reads as connected in the router interface and I get the solid green light on the router. The problem is that I cant browse the internet from my PC, and my Xbox Live fails at the last check (as it can't browse to the site for the same reason that my PC can't browse). I cant browse IP addresses either (so its not a DNS issue, also the 3rd XBL check passes). I have no support on this as my ISP only support their own USB modem, so I am learning as I go here. Does anyone have any idea what router setting I am missing that may cause this? Is it a NAT issue or something more simple or more complicated? Please help!

Have you configured your Router to seek PPoE over RFC1483. This is the only setting that works on any Eircom/IOL product.

    VPI = 8
    VCI = 35
    Encapsulation : PPPoE over RFC1483
    Username <username>@iolbb
    Password <password>
    Confirm password
    Authentication : CHAP
    Connect on demand : yes
    Idle time = 0

check the settings above with your router.
This works with my router , Speedstream, good luck!

Sorted! Router is working and my XBL account is set up. The solution was ridiculously easy, and I still don't know what was going wrong. I had 2 connections, the PPPoE (up) and the default PPPoA (down). I deleted the PPPoE that I had created and the associated phonebook entry. I then configured the PPPoA interface with my details as much as I could, then I backed up the config file and replaced every occurance of PPPoA with PPPoE and uploaded it and hey presto, it worked! I am surprised that such a messy hack would work but it did. Anyway, I am sorted. Thanks for all your feedback folks. I really do appreciate it! ;)
