My friend claims to be getting RTE TV in Vienna.
I understand this is impossible with Sky digital (looking at the footprint Astra 2D)
Anyone know how else he might be getting it ?

Analogue satellite perhaps or a different digital satellite ?

Not impossible, just impractical. If he had a very large dish (1.5-2 metres), a Sky Digibox and card with a live subscription to an Irish address, then he could well be picking up RTE in Vienna via Astra 2D.

There's no other way he could - RTE broadcast *only* to Ireland, Terrestrial and encrypted satellite.

I take it he isn't talking about news bulletins from RTE TV via the internet / or RTE RADIO (which is broadacst FTA across Europe via satellite).

I remember watching TARA for free here. I know RTE have feeds there. but never saw anything.

    34.5 west Intelsat 903

Check at lunchtime and you can get some news feeds.

For the sport you can look when there is a big game outside of Dublin

When I was in Prague I was dieing for a pish so I headed into an Irish bar just on the old square and sure enough there was RTE on the telly(needless to say I did a double take), seems they have a Sky Irish subscription.

Whats the story there? they must have a massive dish

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I'm in Budapest. I think I'm too far east to pick-up the signal..
I haven't see RTE anywhere here..

ive seen UTV in turkey, so I would imagine that you just need a big enough dish

Its gonna take you a 2.5m dish alright in budapest.Im on same longtitude but 2 hrs north in a train as crow flies. 2D is present on a 1.2m dish but its way way below threshold... tried a 0.3 lnb and no joy./.

You could try betacom.hu who are the local dealers in Buda for a large dish but its down to your location I guess.

Well, just outside actually - but have enjoyed perfect reception on RTE, Network 2 and TV3 for past year on a standard sized dish
