Eircom DSL IP Range Blocked

I've been running my own mail server at home on Eircom's DSL service for nearly a year now.

Yesterday evening I sent an email to a number of people in the US yesterday and had two of them bounced back to me. They're both using the Road Runner service over there. I don't have the text that accompanied the bounced email but it basically said that, as part of their attempts to reduce SPAM & viruses, SMTP traffic from the entire Eircom Residential IP Range will not be accepted.

In order to get email to these two people I have to use a different account - hotmail, eircom, linuxmail, etc, which totally defeats the purpose of having my own mail server.

    Bummer!

    Liam

That happens quite a bit. Spamlists often block a range rather than a specific IP address. I guess the thinking is the owner of the IP block doesn't take enough preventative action if more than one IP in the block is spamming. With Sobig, et al., it's easy to see how at least a few DSL customers would get themselves on a list or 12. This happens a bit in colo data centers which can be a pain too.

Why can't you use Eircom's SMTP server either altogether, or just for the troubled destinations?

Yeah. For those destinations that are causing problems, I will have to use eircom's SMTP server or another one in an IP range that hasn't been blocked.

Yeah, its becoming very common, AOL are also doing it. Too many people on customer connections are running open relays.

Why not set up smarthost or whatever the equivalent is for your MTA. You still send mail via your mail server and it seemlessly forwards itself to its final destination via the smarthost.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. I'll definitely look into it.

I didn't know anything about smarthost until this post and had to do a little searching to find some info. For anyone else who's interested, there an informative summary with setup information for SendMail at this URL : http://www.hklc.com/infocenter/805.html

Be aware that there has been a lot of rejected e-mail in the last couple of days (since 26th August) since Osirusoft shut down their service.

    See http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/08/27/0214238&mode=nocomment&tid=111&tid=126 for details.

This may be the root of your problem.

    Ian.
