Broadband slow with XP

    Hi,
Got a new laptop with Windows XP and installed IOL BB but find surfing speeds slow. Sometimes it works like a dream for 10 mins and then slows to 50 b/sec, can't open web pages etc. It worked fine on my old Windows 98SE Toshiba. Anything I need to tweak?

PS Could the erratic behaviour be due to the traffic generated by the virus slowing up the web?

Make sure you dont have any virus on your laptop. There are a good few worms around right now and they are making traffic slow. Found on on another PC last night which slowed my browsing to 50b/s.

It did pretty much the same as the problems your having. Update your Virus Scanner and do a full scan.

Thanks. I've done that but there's no virus so the mystery remains.

I got broadband a few weeks ago, and it was briliant for ages, getting 50-55k downloading from kazaa, however I have since reinstalled XP, and my download are considerable slower now, rarely above 20k, and surfing is slower too. I've tried a few of those spped up programs, but can anyone recommend a good one? or a way to ix the connection?

get new drivers for your modem. I have WinXP and it works perfectly with my BB, 60kb's always achievable (so long as ISP can provide it). Also try mozilla Firebird from www.mozilla.org . Its a faster browser than IE or Netscape.

Aye i noticed that about 1mb/min was uploading off my comp when I had no applications open. Downloaded Stinger Anti virus and it picked up 6 trojans. Cleaned them up for me nice too.

Now my connection is back running 100%.

I had this problem a while ago, no reason whatsoever, rumors of scriptkiddies attacking eircom hardware though.

My broadband is running nicely now. I went to www.pcpitstop.com and ran the free diagnostic test. It found some spyware which I deleted. It also ran a script to double the size of my receive buffer, whatever that is. No sooner was all this done than my Norton Anti-Virus popped up with the news that my PC was infected with the Welchie worm. All that and the computer only three days out of the box!

Anyhow, since then broadband has been running fine (though I still sometimes have to boot it a couple of times in the morning to get the modem working as I had to do with my prevous laptop) and all is well.

Still no reply, though, to the email I sent to IOL support last Friday (Today is Tuesday!) seeking help, despite the promises on the helpline to prioritise email queries.
