Leitrim to get green light at last

LEITRIM is to get its first set of traffic lights.

The least crowded county is the last to have survived without lights. But from next month they will be controlling the traffic flow at the Leitrim Road junction in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Billy Lowe, acting director of services with Leitrim County Council, said there had been problems at peak times. "Particularly since the arrival of MBNA in the town, with the creation of 900 jobs, a lot of additional traffic has been generated."

The council will also install pedestrian traffic lights at the bridge where the N4 bypasses the town.

Is there not already a set of traffic lights on the canal lock outside Leitrim Town?

Am I right that Leitrim is the only county, split almost evenly in two parts, with no direct (within the county) road connection between the two? You have to go through Dowra on the border with Cavan.

In theory then, people can actually learn to drive, and presumably pass a driving test in Leitrim then, without ever seeing a traffic light  ? What's the letter used on reg plates from there, so I can avoid them next time I see one!

My first thought was "That's not true!", until I noticed that the article was from 2003. But it's also true that Leitrim's first set of traffic lights had been deployed a few years previously on the canal.

Personally, I think not to need traffic lights is a very good thing.
