how long in usa? visa tickets etc?

gents im trying to figure out some stuff, im going to go to The states for a few months in the new year, how long can i legally stay there on holiday? AND! if i buy a ticket for say a week, then dont return on it and stay the couple of months then buy a return ticket from there home, will there be hassle? im trying to avoid dealing with too much paper work and immigration ****e. AND whats the score with this new visa thing i need to go to the states from october? thanks

You can stay a max of three months under the current visa waiver program. From Oct your passport must be 'machine-readable' to avail of this program (most are but check with the passport office to be sure).

If you overstay the three months it *will* cause problems and in these post 9/11 days its really not worth fu<king with the immigration folks they can make your life hell.

If you're not working there's really no need to anyway. They'll want to know where you're staying for the duration, proof of when youre coming back and evidence of adequate funds to cover your stay.
