What is this game?

This has been driving me mad for years. I'm looking for the name of a game I used to play. I'll describe it as best as I can. Basically you start off with a little spacecraft. The game is viewed from above. As you progress in the game add packs come into the screen and bounce around. Some are for speed but most are weapon packs. One of the first ones you pick up are guided missles. As you pick up more packs your ship increases in size. When you start the game your weapon is like a 1 fire gun. Then progresses to double fire, then guided missles & double fire and so on....

I remember little tanks that you had to blow up & at the end of each level you have to blow up a huge spaceship. I remember the firing from these things were very hard to escape.

    Can anyone help?

That game could be anything to be honest.

I'll start the bidding at the 1985 Taito arcade game, Slap Fight.

    Flying Shark? Slapfight?

Give us a bit more info, Dave. Was it like a WW2 setting? Outer Space? Fantasy?

What platform did you play it on? (Arcade? C64? Amiga?)

    - Dave.

[Edit] Scratch Flying Shark... your ship doesn't grow... Not too sure about SlapFight either - powerups don't bounce around [/Edit]

Flying Shark was some sort of WWII bomber was it not?

Sorry guys... I'll try to be more specific....

I played it in an arcade. I did a search for slapfight and it is very much like that game - but I dont think thats it. Same type of setting...

I also remembered that when you get a lot of weapon add on packs you get this lightening type gun. There is sort of a beam and "arcs" across the screen blowing everything up?

You know what when I heard that name I was sure that was it. I downloaded it and it isn't the one I'm thinking of but again it's along the same lines.

Flying Shark as i knew it or Sky Shark(same game/different title screen)

    http://www.cling.gu.se/~cl3polof/arcade/SkyShark.html

Tanks, power-ups such as double/triple fire, heat seeking missiles etc... this could be the one.

    Could it be...Varth?

    or Earth joker?

Of course it could have been a neoGeo game in which case you've got a load of similar games:)

Again no I'm afraid. The craft you control is def same/simular to slapfight and def is not a plane.

Well tbh theres another 30 games I can think of that sound like the game your after. So...... head to www.mame.dk and for genre put in Shooter/Space or Shooter Airplane (As your blowing up tanks and stuff I'd go with Airplane) from the drop down menu and get searchin;) Basically if it's emulated your going to find it at the above:) best of luck!

I would have said slapfight. Maybe it's the two Raiden games.

Sounds like Raiden to me, considering how common the game was in Ireland.

Could you give us a rough idea of the time you played this game dave? The vertical scrolling shoot-em-up (shmup) was a seriously popular genre. There are literally hundreds of games that fit the description you've given us.

Have a look through the reviews on this site. They have alot of screenshots.

Theres a second raiden thats just as good. Not sure if mame emulates it but the PC version is abandonware. You can get it from abandonware sites without the music if you do a bit of googling. It's not as good without music.
