Hi everyone. I'm kinda new to this whole board thing. i was just kinda curious bout it cos ive seen podge use it a bit. i noticed DCU wasn't in this forum so i thought i'd stand up and say DCU!!

Eh DCU for after hours fun? Hmm the new bar thing The HUb is pretty cool. Problem is that you can't even enter bar unless you're over eighteen which is kinda bummer if all you wanna do is play pool * innocent little smile*

DCU is pretty well stocked with clubs and societies which all organise fun nights out.

This is just really a shout out and a start for other DCu people to say hi or i dunno me to ramble really...:-)

    MEOW!

Awww...don't worry, give it a while and you will be as apathetic and disillusioned as the rest of the students out there....

Hey am doing a BSc. Sports Science and Health, the college grew on me (like a fungus) over the last year and despite the fact that any social events I went to I regretted spending the money on I still am happy with the course I chose as it is what I want to be doing.

There are many DCU heads around on boards although most seem to be doing a computer course of some kind.

I'm not a fan of the campus and noticed a high percentage of snobby pretnetious Fuckwits around, was fortunate however to have a very low number in my course.

The ents in the college aren't great and I'd love to get involved in organising that if at all possible. Although I imagine I'm too late to do so.

    Mbleugh anyway.

    'Wan DCU

Oh i had few of those "regretful" events too. Too much alkehol and all. I've calmed down alot since ive started goin out with my current bf. :-)

DCU campus is lovely for me. When it's pissing rain tho u always wish there was more sheltered areas and i always question why there is a gazebo type thing with no bloody cover in front of spar!!!

    :-)

I have to say that the course i choose ( AS2 now was CES1) was the best one i could have chose and couldn't be happier.

The couches in the cafe under the library rock as well! I look forward to "lounging" in them again!!! :-D

UCD get ur own board :-p

    We have two bars

Much better sporting and computer facilities and a far nicer/cheaper restaurant than UCD so one more bar than us isn't exactly much to shout about to be perfectly honest.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

If you count the one in the helix it brings it up to 3 bars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

I've not been in DCU for years. But I was always under the impression UCD had the best sporting facilities out of all third level places in Dublin.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,552 ✭✭✭✭GuanYin

In a direct comparison of all three Dublin Universities (where I have either studied, researched or worked), I think they all have their merits.

DCU has the best societies scene in terms of funding and college support, but unfortunately its a little cliquey and can be off putting.

Trinity has the best value for money in terms of food and drink and has pulling power for extra curricular funding.

UCD have the best sports facilities and the sports bar and forum bar are much nicer than any of the others.

    The bad points are:

DCU is a degree factory with awful ents and the college puts commerce far ahead of its students in terms of importance.

Trinity has an element of snobbishness about it. I've experienced it with students and staff alike. Other than that i can't think of any real downside. If you go there, you will probably end up succumbing to it anyway.

UCD is a bleak souless place and if quite frankly just too big.

That's partially true - lots of them about but not necesarily a high percentage. They are the vocal ones in the college and they tend to get themselves noticed.

My entire class (telecoms) was laid back and never paid a jot of notice to the whole student politic thing or the snobby pretentious thing.

So while there is loads of sound people about the college the downside is that they are not as noticeable and are less likely to take part in most of the college activities, which is left for the "Fuckwits".

As far as ents is concerned - it has it's good years and bad years, a lot of it depends on who is running it at the time. Was brilliant when I started years ago but maybe I was just young, drunk and making the most of it (which is the key).

ahh thats just the Business school.. best to stay clear of the place if at all possble.

as for the bars... well the old bar used to be great, the new bar is too bright and cold, used to feel odd getting drunk in there.

society life is the only that keeps the campus alive after 5pm, as sykeirl pointed out it can get cliquey, but thats only because if you spend most of your time running a soc, organising events etc you tend to socialise more with them. Then if you are organising events you will have some dealings with the students union, which then leads into the whole student politics thing, again try and steer clear of that... well my view on that now is 'Don't vote, apathy rawks'

That new bar is not a good place to get drunk during the day.
Too many bright colours and such wide open space just makes your head spin. Its like what I'd imagine a bad trip is like.

Stay clear of the SU and society organisation. go with the flow and enjoy yourself but the politics can really put you off.

    bitter are we?

So is DCU actualy any good after 1st year? I'm starting computer apps this year, and I'm kind of concerned about the number of people bitching about it. Also, do you know if there's a society that shows anime, because I'd be interested in joining it, should there in fact be. One.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 927 ✭✭✭decob

As has been said before, you get out of college whatever you put into it... so go and enjoy, join some clubs/societies, meet lots of new people and get drunk as often as possible and as your a CA, watch out for computer architecture (it;s the one subjuect that most people do bad in..)..

I'm just bitter, twisted and cynical cos i got mixed up in the politics of students life and the college and saw the place in another light..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭taby

I think no matter what college ur in there is sumthin to bitch about.

    :-)

Steer clear of food in canteen as well altho u eventually develop stomach able to take its food. :-)

Not at all! Just a little older and wiser.

I think of it as "an education". Its amazing how having a job and money mellows you out :)

I've always been a fan of DCU really.

I'm not too happy with the bars but since I don't drink it matters little to me.

I think the New Bar isn't the sorta place people would get drunk in though. It's a sorta cafe/trendy bar type thing. I like it though. I find the Old Bar a bit dreary and drab.

If you wanna see good Student Centre Facilities look no further than UL. They've got it sorted. And they're new Sports Complex is pretty nifty! :p

I wouldn't get too bitter about Politics. It can suck indeed but that's the way it is.

I set up the archery club about a year and a half ago and I'll say we had problems but we don't get stressed on committee work. Take it easy, get it done. If you sign up for it you've gotta expect it to be a bit of work.

It can be hard to organise Ents stuff for sure. It often involves ganging up with other Socs/Clubs.

I dunno about Anime but sure you could talk to FilmSoc or whoever you think would be most likely into it else set one up yourself. It's not that hard. Just get a group together and you'll be grand.

had one of them waiting for a boat there last month. they are the business!!

i'm over 18, but can a few of me mates get in there as guests or anything, or am i gonna have to go Mission Impossible style to get them in?

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

Depends on the day etc but on fairly normal busy enuf days it's DCU ID required and one guest can be signed in (as far as I know-could be more) but they MUSt have Garda ID/Passport/Drivers Licence.

I actually just heard today sumthin which really pissed me off and stuff.

I wasn't eighteen till midway thru my first yr in college so i missed out a bit on stuff. Now i find out u now need a garda ID or passport tho i think they're only accepting garda id plus ur student and bar memebership to get into bar!!

    Its redicuolous!!!

Anyone else feel same way or am i the only person who doesn't like this new rule?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

I don't really see the problem with looking for ID, a few people last year and I'm sure this year too asked for a Y to be put on their ID's as they "will be 18 in about 3 weeks" so as to get into the bar, these people still aren't 18 now going into second year so it's only to cover the bar managments asses which I feel is perfectly acceptable.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

Yeah but think of the delays and hassle when it comes to Rag Week (assuming there is one anymore). The queues outside the bar were always an amsolute disaster. So much so that I personally avoid the bar at all costs on Rag Week. It's simply not worth the effort.

It'll be almost as bad when it comes time for the Socs Ball/Celtic Ball which does make the bar the most interesting sight you'll see in quite a while: everyone decked up to the nines in the Tuxs/Dresses in a bar* ! :p

*Was on a rant Amz... Stop laying into me!! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Yeah I've been there, but seriously what's your problem? If people aren't willing to do something about it then it's never going to change so you've no right to complain about it in all honesty.

I've noticed that NUIG received complaints/constructive criticism about the state of their bar and they have taken steps to improve it. I don't see why something similar couldn't happen in DCU.

Then they should just stop this practise of letting ppl get membership before they're 18. Your DOB is already on the card, demanding extra ID is ridiculous and a waste of time. I shouldn't have to bring my passport into college with me every day, just in case I decide to go for a drink after lectures that day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

Are you sure DOB is on the card?

I don't know why you're giving out to me that they allow underage people to join the bar or whatever the hell they called it today. Entertainment yokie or fun pit hehehe fun pit would be cool anyway... I digress, it's perfectly reasonable for them to ask for ID. If you were going to a bar/club anywhere else and you were asked for ID you wouldn't rant about it. The bar is not owned/managed by DCU it's managed by an independent person(s) therefore they are responsible for their premisis and ensuring that their licence is not lost/violated (whatever)

If the bar was closed next week because underage drinkers were found on the premisis I've a good feeling that there'd be cries of "why didn't they check for ID" there's always shit like that and it becomes boring and tedious.

Whats the hassle with carrying ID anyway? It's a small card (if it's Garda ID) why can't people carry it around with their student cards? it's law now for under 25's to carry valid ID and in other EU countries people don't seem to have a problem with having a valid form of ID with them at all times. I think it's just the Irish attitude of lets moan about something completely insignificant and irrlevant and actually put forward no proposals to improve the situation.

Last 6 digits in the right hand corner. It should be a lot clearer, I don't know why they just don't redesign the cards.

Not giving out to you :) just expressing my frustration at the new crappy policy

Of course ID should be required to get into a licenced premise, but it has always been required. You were required to show your Student ID which varifies that you're a member of the bar and thereby or legal age. Now they want 2 forms of ID, which is what I think is stupid.

I think this is leading to the one ID for everything kinda thing.

If we could get a specialised Student Card that has the Garda logo on it or something to prove that we've gone to a Garda station and proved our identification.

Though I do know people who've gotten Garda IDs by giving someone elses birthcert but that's another issue!

I think a lot of people will forget ID etc as people do but I still think that Ragweek is either gonna require a LOT more bouncers or a lot more time. Of course I don't know if there is a ragweek cause of the new alcohol policies. Must ask someone about that actually.

Did you hear that they're banned from advertising Drinks Promotions on campus? Whether the event is on campus or not.

on the ID thing, they just want to cover their own asses!!

the bar man was telling me yeaterday, that its now compulsory to feck you out on your arse if you are skipping a lecture and your in the bar!! before he could only suggest it. bit mad if you ask me!

Definitely the bar needs to cover it's own ass - you wouldn't want it having to be shut down like it was when I went into first year (though that was for different reasons it has happened).

That's an interesting one about getting kicked out if you have a lecture. Naturally they will be none the wiser if you say you don't have a lecture or if they are the wiser you can claim it was cancelled. Did they actually ever check or suggest this? If enforced it would make a mockery of any attempt at a rag week.

Sounds to me like one of those "threat" rules that is never really enforced. Maybe they'll make a spectical of some people towards the beginning of the year by chucking them out for skipping a lecture, but thats about it. I can't see them going around asking everyone to see their timetables, otherwise people would just go to a different pub :/

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 2,094 ✭✭✭halenger

    Have lectures become compulsery?

Surely not. I've had lecturers spew that they aren't compulsery for two years!! The odd one or two will fail you if you don't go but most of the ones who take attendance just use it so you've no way of saying I was at all the lectures etc etc after you've failed!!

Lectures aren't compulsory but it's probably more the college being seen as irresponsible having a bar on campus and giving students an alternative to lectures.

There's too many nasty journalists in the College and if they start doing their homework on the reasons why people don't attend lectures the finger would be quickly pointed at the bar and criticism would ensue. Without actually enforcing the rule they are giving themselves breathing space.
