Getting Sky Ireland Abroad

    Hi,

My sister lives in Holland and is very interested in getting RTE etc.
She already has a digibox and a (soon to be deactivated) version 1 FTV card.

I was recently in Totterdells in Stillorgan and they gave me the number to ring if you only want to obtain a Sky subscription card.

Does anyone know if this is possible - in particular with regard to the card activation?

As far as an Irish address is concerned, there shouldn't be a problem, as my mother still lives in Ireland.

What could be a problem, however, is that I have an Irish Sky subscription in her name (I live in Germany). Is it possible to have two Sky subscriptions?? She is scared stiff that Sky will "send round the boys...".

I'd be extremely grateful for any information.

Cheers and regards from sweltering Stuttgart,

    Stephen

Yes it is possible to have two separate sky subs.
All you do is give your mothers address but if say her address is
    12 skydigital close, Balbriggan
You change the address to 12A skydigital close ie pretend there is a flat there that your sister is living in.
If it's just a house name on the address somewhere in the country eg The Brambles Balbriggan co dublin
Just change that to Flat 3 the Brambles and take it from there.

Tell her to put her credit card on the sign up form for the direct debit and get your mum to post over the new card .
Then it's the same phone call procedure that you probably went through.
Although it might be simpler to activate the card and box in Ireland and bring it over if your sister is home on holidays.

Note : Use a second hand box off ebay or summat for this or a brand new one as a subsidised Sky connection will involve a phoneline connection which obviously won't work in Holland

BTW There should be no probs signal wise in holland.

And don't worry the heavy Gang won't come a calling from Sky, they're just glad to be getting the money:D

*edit* of course be sure and inform the postman of the situation.

Just wondering Stephen - how is your reception on the 2D channels (RTE, the BBCs, Hallmark, E4 etc) in Stuttgart?

    (I'm just being curious/nosey:))

I'm not sure manual switch on still works.

    Lads,

Thanks a million for the quick reply and your help.

It looks as if the formalities part of it shouldn't be a problem.

The only thing is activating the card - as there's no way we can connect it to a phone line (I don't even know if my sister has the original phone jack).

I got my mother to (try) to activate my box over the phone when I got it a few years ago. She rang Sky and pretended to follow the instructions with her remote. When the guy asked her what she could see on the screen (meaning some sort of technical details), she said "Starsky and Hutch" - her logic being that you'll always find a S+H repeat on some channel. Just thought I'd share that little one with you :)

Sceptre: As far as reception is concerned, I only have problems when it's absolutely bucketing it down. Mind you, I have two digiboxes (IRL and UK) connected to the incoming signal. When both are connected, I cannot receive E4, UTV and a few others. As soon as I disconnect one box, however, I can get everything.
Never have a problem with RTE (except in a severe thunderstorm).

    Cheers,

    Stephen :)

Just out of curiosity Stiabhna are you using a twin feed LNB?

I did a manual activation with a mobile and the ID switched off.

Yep, I have a twin LNB - one pointing to 19° for all the German channels etc. and the other for Sky.

I also did a manual activation over my mobile in the end. But AFAIK, that's not possible anymore.

Someone please tell me I'm wrong :)

Stiabhna sorry to enquire further, but I have two digibox's ,one for Ireland and the other for the UK. I have them connected separately ie two coax leads going out to a 1.2 meter dish with a twin fed LNB. The bit I don't understand is

    Stiabhna

Why do you say it is no longer possible to use your mobile with id disabled, to call for card activation.

I have one coax cable in the living room. It is connected to a splitter - one cable goes into the Irish box and one into the UK one. I reckon the signal must be attenuated by the splitter, because with both boxes connected, I can't get some channels (like E4). As soon as I disconnect the UK box (i.e. unscrew the satellite connection), everything is ok again.

From what I've been reading in this forum, you cannot activate a SKY card over the phone any more - you have to connect it to your phone line.

    Cheers,

    Stephen

Maybe a better quality splitter or two leads and a twin feed lnb but that can be hassle. I'm not sure but I hope the leaks do not cause damage to the digiboxes.

    Why not try it anyway.

TBH, I'm not too worried about not receiving E4 and the rest. When they deactivate the UK cards, I'll probably disconnect the UK box for good.

Its not a good idea to split a coax from a single LNB as this can cause polarity control problems, two receivers should ideally have two coax's from a twin output lnb.

I had problems with activating card over the phoneline about a month ago, they manually activated it after a rigorous trouble shooting session.

If I bring my digibox to holland with me, activated already here, will it work?
Do I just need to point a dish at the sky satellite then and hookup the digibox?
