My advise for people going there is not to book before you go. People will come up to you at the airport and offer you cheap accomodation and even offer you a free lift to the city to look at the place.

well, well, of course they will offer you cheap accommodation. the question is where and what kind? the answer is simple: cheap but dark, ugly hostel or the apartment for the same price as we have. they will never offer you any hotel for the price, lower than the hotel offers. "free" lift to the city actually is not free. it's price will be added to the whole price for the accommodation later (they won't even tell you).

Ah yes, the evil people who undercut.

I know someone who was in prague a few weeks ago - was met off the airport by people looking for people to stay in their appartments (the usual story in train stations etc. in eastern europe).

They availed of the lift to the city and the accomodation. Worked out very cheap (either including or ignoring the lift which didn't appear to be charged for). The appartment itself was very nice and very central which meant they didn't need taxis at night (which as far as I know can be a real tourist trap in the truest sense of the words).

I'm not recommending the practice because I know you can get stung but anyone that I have heard of taking accomodation on arrival has always been very happy.

Also Prague has lots of dirt cheap camp sites and the hostels should have good availability this time of year.

Went summer two years ago. Arrived in train station off train from Berlin, met an old guy who showed us photos of his place. Cheap but cheerful, worked out at £90 for six days between two of us. Also on a tram route which served virtually all the tourist attractions (#24 IIRC, passed by the castle and the Pyramidia Hotel)

Going in three weeks, costing c.€140 a night for a double room in a hotel near Charles' Bridge.

You decide which you want to pay.

in prague as we speak, we booked hotel before we came and it is very cheap and absolutley gorgeous, but today we saw really nice apartments for just 10 euro a night.
While ye will get cheap accomdation moon, you have to remember that you need to know where you are going first, get a good map, nearly every where in prague 1 and 2 is in walking distance, as was said above try stay away from taxi's.
They are a tourist trap, but when you get ripped off (we have twice), you have to realise that it is only by two or three euros's, so no big deal really.
Word of advice, it should only cost you 200 kroner to go anywhere in the city, 200 kroner is about six euro.
Also the dearest taxi you will take is from the airport as it is a good bit out, but there are minibuses there if you look for half the price and they will take you any where in the city.

having great time here, don't want to go home, but the joy of prague is that when we do, we haven't touched the money we have in the bank, are living really well of the cash we brought on us.
In fact we are absolutely loaded over here, just had dinner and it came to 394 kroner (13 euro) and we gave the girl 500 kroner (16 euro) and told her to keep the change, she nearly start crying, feel very wealthy.

    Zsa Zsa gogo. :p

    Ah memories...

Did something similar myself, gave a waiter a £4 tip (old money), he was so happy, I'd say he framed it.
