what do you think have been the best bargains for each of your clubs in recent years?

    CFC:

Gavin Peacock- was a star in the Hoddle era very attacking and his work ethic was unbelievable signed from Newcastle for 250,000

Mark Hughes- we had signed Gullit and it came as a suprise but I was elated at the news also, a old warhorse held up the ball brilliantly and his goal against Vicenza will stay in my memory forever signed from Utd for 1.5 mil.

Gianfranco Zola- a snip at 4.5 mil from Parma was the little magician, could could conjure up magical moments out of the ordinary and was an absolute legend, dancing around defenders the little shimmy, close control he even scored some headed goals.

Dan Petrescu- started off at right wing back moved to right mid best asset coming inside and using the ball to his best of his capabilities, fell out with Vialli signed for 2.5 from Sheff Wed

Tore Flo- no one heard of the big gentle giant but at 330,000 he was a gem for a big player could run at defenders had good control drifts out wide at all but wasn't and out and out striker signed from Brann Bergen.

Frank Lebouef- not the greatest defender but what he did with the ball cannot be argued about a superb passer could score goals from 25 yards, had a mouth on him and eventually Claudio had enough signed from Strasbourg for 2.5 mil.

Robbie Di Matteo- a crisp passer could score wonderful goals and was a great team player signed from Lazio for 4.9 mil.

William Gallas- saw him once against Utd and he scored lightening pace sees danger everytime very strong in the tackle distrubtion perhaps something he's improving on signed for 6.5mil from Marseille

Gullit and Poyet Vialli were frees I only put down the players who I felt money spent very wisely.

    :)

Best bargains are always going to be the ones developed from within - so for Liverpool the obvious ones are Owen, Gerrard, Murphy, McManaman, Redknapp, Fowler and I'm sure that list is easily added to.

Of the players that we have bought this season Kewell is looking like a bargain but that remains to be seen (hopefully Finnan also).

Hyypia, Hencoz, Riise, Baros are all worth the money that was paid for them.

Lastly Medjani, I know nothing about him but that he is an 18 yr old centre back from the French academy. We got him for free so he is one to watch.

Yeah especially Hypia reminds me of Robert Huth for CFC.

Glen Johnson could go on to great things signed for 2mil +4 depending on appearances.:)

    Right on p.pete.

Just a few additions to the list are the two French lads that cost 6million altogether. I reckon that is a bargain after seeing the two of them in action - especially Le Tallac. Pongolle has his strong points too - just needs to open his Liverpool account and he'll be class

    MUFC

Denny Irwin: 625,000 from Oldham. What a signing. Fergie always regarded Irwin as being his best bargain of all time. He was also idirectly responsible for the signing of Cantona

Paul Parker: Signed from QPR in 1991. Super little full back but was a little unlucky with injury. As a result his career was cut short

Andrei Kanchelksis: Great signing for United. Although things turned a little sour at the end of his utd career he was still a bargain at 500,000

Peter Schemical: What a signing. Arguably the best keeper of all time.

Eric Cantona: 1.2 million. Everyone knows why.

Ole Gunnar: 1.2 million, 1.2 million was a bargain for the norweigen. Especially when the record transfer for the premiership was 15 million for Shearer.

Teddy Sheringham: 3.5 Million. Great signing for Man U. Essential part in United Treble winning team

I'd add Ronny Johnsen to that...

I'd consider Roy Keane a bargain for Utd also. Seemed a lot of money at the time but it has definitely been worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,754 ✭✭✭Big Chief

when Celtic signed Henrik Larsson for £650,000 back in 1997 from feyenoord.

Best bargain ever. The guy is a legend, no other bargain will ever compete with this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭AthAnRi

True marct, 1.5 million I believe. He was a terrific player for ManU and still is a terrefic player for Villa. The most unlucky player ever with injury. (Thanks to Michael Owen) He was a terrific Centre back, can defend and is very comfortable on the ball. He also provided usefull cover in Midfield when the oppurtunity arose.

As for Keane p.pete also true but didn't add him cause at the time it was a transfer record.

I have to admit though, despite liverpools signings in the past, Harry Kewells signing for 5 million is one of the transfer coupes of the decade

Big Chief, Henrik is Definately one of the best bargains ever

Bryan Roy for Nottingham Forest cost £2.5m I think. Led Forest to 3rd place, then forgot how to play football along with all his teammates.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,512 ✭✭✭Sundy

Mark Delaney for aston villa, we purchased him for next to nothing off Cardiff and he hasnt looked back since!

Also Thomas Hitzlsperger, who we nicked of Bayern Muinch, deffo a star of the future but may be slow to be recgonised internationally because he is playing in england.

For Southampton it'd have to be:

Anti Niemi - £2m (Best and most under-rated keeper in the Prem)
Anders Svensson - 300k (Only recently too)
James Beattie - £1m (Almost top scorer in the Prem last season)

There are pleny more there but those ones really stand out.

solksjaer, silvestre, o'shea, shmeichael, beckham, keane, cantona, giggs, pallister, bruce, robson, irwin, ince, hughes, mc clair, djemba, ronaldo, howard, kleberson.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Explain to me how you know that Howard, Djemba and Kleberson are great baragins already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

one is a world cup winner for 6m, any world cup winner is unique. he's also been hailed as the first name on the teamsheet for brazil.

howard is the most promising keeper in the league and was the best in the us by far.

djemba was excellent in friendlies and for nantes and at 3-4m you cant lose.

those 3 players cost 10m. 3 of them are internationals, one a world cup winner. they have 35caps between them and the average age is 23. they can only get better at old trafford.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

yes but it was players who have been playing for year or 3 or 4 or even years Kleberson and Ronaldo havent even played yet.

Yes yes they certainly look like good signings but you still can have no idea whether they will fulfill their potential or not.

Massimo fucking Taibi looked like a good signing too.

    Henry - £12million
    van Nistelrooy - £19million

    Need I say more?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,219 ✭✭✭invincibleirish

and was the best in the us by far

tbh,its a bit like saying "best cricketer in poland" no?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

fair enough, they havnt proven themselves yet to some people. although all have managed to pin down a regular international place. they've obviously impressed some people.

i'll come back in 3 or 4 years and be wondering who ever doubted kleberson, djemba and howard. at least 2 of those 3 will go down as great utd legends.

vieira, larsson, cantona have to be the greatest ever bargains. if only wim jansen had stayed on at paradise.

fair enough, they havnt proven themselves yet to some people.

They may not have proved themselves at UTd yet but as smermon points out they have at previous clubs and international level and the early indictions at utd certainly point at distinguised careers at UTD for all three summer signings that have played to date.

For me Cantona has to be the biggest bargain of all time. He won the League he won a leagus winners medal for everey full season he played in England Leeds and Utd which proves what an influential player he was for both clubs.IMO No other player has ever had such an positive influence on 2 clubs with a 100% winning record in the league. Even at the time of sale 1.2m for GOD turned out to be the bargain of the Century.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

Cantona was a superb footballer but I'll never forget that attack on the palace fan or the stamp on the Swindon player, thats the diff between him and Zola, Franco was a true proffessional wouldn't resort to anything like that, was a great man on and off the pitch.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

thats the diff between him and Zola

Not the only difference. Cantona won Winners medals in every full Season he played in England. IMO his influence inspire belief in the Utd youngsters of the day and was a major factor in the decade that has followed for UTD. To compare him with zola does not do him justice. Without doubt Cantona was the greatest footballing bargain of all time.

My favorite is denis Irwin, never let anybody down ever and still at the top.

Bargain of this season Mendieta on Loan to Boro, two seasons ago best midfielder in Europe!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭AthAnRi

I don't know about Mendieta, Great player and all but Kewell to Liverpool for 5 is a great deal and I hate to say it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,467 ✭✭✭smemon

jardel to bolton has to be up there too with mendieta to boro.

how about j-j okacha to bolton, a steal or what?! kept them up in real style.

I would say that the signing of JohnALdridge for TRanmere for 250,000 in 1991 was the best bit of business done in recent times by a club. They signed a proven goal scorer who went on to be manager and because of his profile and involvement in the game signed some experienced players for that club. Check out his stats as both player and manager of TRFC.

How can Mendietta and Jardel be considered bargains when the former has only a few games under his belt and the latter has hardly played?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Gary McAllister on a free - half the reason Liverpool had such a poor season last time out was because we missed him so much. He had such a huge influence on the success of the Treble season, and scored goal after vital goal just when they were most needed. To be voted the player of the UEFA Cup just shows how great he was.

Henrik Larsson! I dont think Celtic even paid a million for him now he was a bargain!
