Does anyone here ever frequent comedy clubs in Dublin at all?

    Are they any good?

Can you reccommend any particular comediens and places they play at regularly.

    Tks,
    Hyb

Went to the club in the GPO in Galway nearly every Sunday night when I was in 3rd year there - Tommy Tiernan and Gerry Mallon alternated MC'ing :ninja:

Only been to comedy in Dublin once, and that was last month: Barry Murphy's Comedy Circus in Vicar St.

Was brilliant - gf loved it (thought it'd all be high-brow ****!) and Tiernan and Aonghus Macanally were deadly. Joe Rooney was kinda ****e, but David Savage (I think) did a brilliant pre-show...show...thingy.

Apparently there's a comedy thing that goes on in the International Bar. Don't know a thing about it though.

Dublin has a good scene at the moment with the Ha'penny Bridge Inn, The Comedy Cellar, The Bankers and The Sugar Club being the most high profile places. The Laughter Lounge should re-open early next year sometime.

Of those mentioned I'll do mini-reviews.

Ha'Penny Bridge Inn: (adjacent Ha'Penny Bridge)
Does two different nights that I've seen; Eddie Naessen's Comedy Room is a mixed bag and it really depends who shows up. The scond night is an open mike night and as with all open mikes you pays your money and you takes your chances....

The Bankers: (side street opposite central bank)
Intimate little venue, again its improv and nights vary but usually a good night there. Sometimes you know the names, sometimes you haven't a clue...

The Comedy Cellar (upstairs in International Bar)
Another intimate (and dingy) venue but a brilliant night.
Two different nights running Des Bishop and Karl Spain put on a great show, including lots of crowd participation (especially Spain if he's in the mood). Dermot Carmody's is a little more irratic, with the odd newcomer slot it can vary from hilarious to not quite funny. Still for my money "The Original and Still The Best" venue

The Sugar Club (Bottom of Leeson St)
The notsofunny Susan Collins (of Nuala's fame) runs The Laughing Club here and the very funny Neil Delamere is part of the group (then again so is that annoying lanky guy with the guitar). At 15 Euro its the most expensive venue and it hasn't run for a while anyway....

If you are out northside Brendan Burke runs a comedy night in Gibneys in Malahide. Brendan himself doesn't seem to have any new material since 1996 when I first saw him but he has some pretty good comedians there (David Doherty for example) to back him up.

I recommend Des Bishop though... last time I saw him was one of the best gigs I've seen...only 20-30 people there, 2-3 hours of comedy and it cost 6 euros!!!

    Thanks for the feedback folks...

I've heard people mention a new venue in Ballinteer, Taylors 3 Rock. It'd suit better as it's nice 'n local for me...

    - Has Anyone been? Review?
