    Reds line up Ronaldo

    Stuart Brennan

TEENAGE Portuguese sensation Cristiano Ronaldo has been targetted for a £7.7m move to Manchester United.

The Sporting Lisbon striker, who impressed in last week's 3-1 friendly win over the Reds, is said to be ready to sign this week.

He is already in England, having travelled with his teammates for yesterday's goalless draw with Spurs.

The 18-year-old was left out of the starting line-up, fuelling speculation that he would stay behind and meet United officials while Sporting flew back to Portugal today.

United face late challenges from Real Madrid and Chelsea but Ronaldo is said to be keen to join the Reds.
If he signs, he will be the first fruit of the co-operation agreement between the two clubs that was sealed in May.

    Admiration

The Reds have been long-time admirers of the youngster, who has also been closely watched by Juventus, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, and Liverpool.

United are keeping quiet on the speculation but it is believed that the player is just one of several names in the frame as the August 31 Champions League deadline approaches.

Barcelona defender Carlos Puyol is another being strongly linked to Old Trafford, along with Ajax's Hatem Trebelsi.

The Reds were also due to hear today whether Brazilian midfield star Kleberson has been cleared to complete a £5.5m move from Atletico Paranaense.

The deal hit a snag because Kleberson did not meet the usual Department of Employment criteria for non-EU players, not having been a regular member of the Brazilian squad for the last two years.

But with the evidence overwhelming that he is now an established international, United were hopeful they could force his work permit through on appeal.

If the appeal is successful, the transfer should be completed in time for Kleberson to be available for the opening Premiership clash with Bolton on Saturday.

He is desperate to play for the real Reds aparantly :) - "Liverpool are one of the best clubs in England and it would be a dream for any player to represent a club of such traditions. Michael Owen is a great player and any youngster would love to be in the same side as him."

he's be a fool to pick 5th place champions league rejects liverpool over champions and regular european side utd. liverpool come 4th after utd, arsenal and now chelsea.

they are not a top 3 side anymore. kewell and finnan are 2 players, they need to sign 9 more!

I'll go out on a limb here & say that I don't think he'll sign for Liverpool .... he's not French after all ;)

Don't be so ridiculous, players like Owen, Gerrard, Hyppia and Henchoz would walk into any Premiership side.

Oh God. Its the Utd vs 'Pool thing again.

Over time football teams have their troughs and peaks. Utd are on their way down, 'Pool are on their way up. That's why Utd. can't seem to sign anybody except for those who were on less than e2k / week at their old clubs (Howard, Jumbo Jumbo etc.) An 18 year old with a bit of cop on will surely choose 'Pool who are on the way up!!

Now you're just being silly. Owen is a consistant 25-30 goals a season striker, who has proved his worth on the international stage - even in a lean season like last year he managed to bag 28 goals - and he's still only 23. Any team in Europe, nevermind the Premiership, would welcome him with open arms.

For you to say that Hyppia would "maybe" get a game while Henchoz wouldn't is just plain wrong. Ask most knowledgable Liverpool fans and they'll tell you that while Hyppia may be the captain, Henchoz is the better defender and a bigger loss when he's out injured.

my fault, lets put a sock in it. i can see this is going into a UTD-v-POOL debate. lets let the boy decide.

    Sorry lads,

Nothing got to do with Utd vs 'Pool, I hadn't even mentioned United.

What Premiership sides would Owen & Henchoz get into? None of the top 4 from last season I would guess. Would you really replace Henry, van Nistelrooy, Shearer or Zola with Owen? Hardly. The modern definition of a "striker" is the no. of goals he gets in a season. I'll readily stick for a more complete player any day of the week. By the same rationale, Barthez would have been the best keeper in the league last year by letting in fewer goals than anybody else, but I'd say most Utd. fans would take anybody but him between the sticks. Owen could hardly help but be the top striker for LFC given the competition (Emile etc.).

Henchoz likewise, although not a bad player, is only noticable because of the presence of Hyppia beside him. I'll think you'll find that Henchoz's days may be numbered with the arrival of Ayala (good buy by GH if he can get him).

Liverpool on the way up and Utd. on the way down. Maybe you'll correct me but plageurising Kewell with this doesn't really stick. Utd have just won the league, and Liverpool have dropped out of the Champions League.

    Regards

If you would rather Shearer or Zola ahead of Owen, I suggest watching footie on a TV rather than listening to it on the radio! And Henchoz would walk into any central defensive partnership in England. The reason for this is that he complements the main central defender. Keown, Sylvestre, Brown, Bramble?!?! He is far better than all of these. In fact Liverpool miss him far more than Hyypia when he is injured. The only possible partnership he wouldnt break up would be Terry and Gallas IMO
