I got my new style iPod a few months ago....wow! They're fantastic! I had a minidisc before that and used to get p*ssed off having to bring a stack of discs with me every day for the train to work.
iPod you don't have that problem! I've the 10GB one and i've still got 6GB left on it.
If you have a mac its great, the firewire connection charges it as it's plugged in, and transferring mp3s over firewire is amazingly fast, about 5 - 10 seconds for a full album! Don't know how fast it is over USB 2 as I have a powerbook and don't have the need for USB.

Battery life is really my only gripe (along with the fact it scratches on the mirrored back part really easily - buy a second skin case for it!)....apple say 8 hours...in reality it's more like 4 for me. I do listen to music as loud as it'll go though.

It also has some nice little retro games, will sync with iCal (and i think outlook) so you can see your calender on it, and you can view text files on it.

It's just a really handy gadget, I take it EVERYWHERE!
Can only really be compared with the Creative Zen which is also very good but is a lot bulkier and -correct me if i'm wrong - has support for usb2 only.

Eth0, a mate told me that the iPod could only have one 'home' machine or something like that (something about it being only able to fully operate with the first machine you hook it up to - sorry thats a bit vague, i was very drunk:) ) Is that true? It sounds like a bit of nonsense to me..

Nah, I hooked it up to an emac before and it worked fine and copied music over...everything was fine.
Your friend might be getting it mixed up with the funny rules on music downloaded from Apple's iTunes music store...I think you can only use the music you download on a few authorised machines....not sure of the technicalities, never bothered to look into it as it's not available to Ireland :(

I thought owning an iPod would be the apex of my life. But after forking out E500 and waiting 4 months for it to arrive only to find that it only works with OSX is a bit of a pain. I still use OS9 and am not willing to make the changeover yet and especially not to listen to music! So back in the box and back to Mac it goes.

Ive a 15 gig new model one and im quite happy with it. Having 3500 songs is nice for boring holidays :)

My only problems would be with the software it uses on pcs (musicmatch is awful), the easily scratchable back like etho said and the price.

Is there really no OS9 software for it?

I find that hard to believe, im sure theres some shareware stuff out there.

Why Not? I don't even have Classic installed anymore OS X does it all!

To be honest I was loathe to make the change - I don't know why really - I guess my workflow is still OS9 and I had no OSX software (Quark, Photoshop etc.) but I made the change over the weekend and now I love OSX. some one sorted me out with all the software, apps and games I need (all legal of course) and now its like owning a brand new mac again. Oh but after my mac asked me if I wanted to upgrade my ipod to 2.0.2 it killed it and now it really does have to go back to be fixed!

really like my 30GB iPod. I still have an old 5GB model from last year (might sell it as my wife hasn't used it at all).
I love the dock - I've got it and the power adaptor hooked up to my hifi and that goes into multiple rooms around the house.

Would like to buy another firewire-to-dock cable though because it's totally proprietary.
