Heading out in Dublin, What to wear?

Righto, sorry if this has been brought up many times before, which I'm almost certain it has, but I couldn't find any past threads, so ****it.

I'm heading up to Dublin this weekend, with mates. The chances are we'll be pubbing, if not clubbing. I can make the assumption that neat dress is essential, and this includes "no runners", sportswear in general. Can one still wear jeans, or will I have to bring pants.

I've no idea where we're going to end up, but if someone could let me know what some of the more popular venues require with regards their dress code, I would grately appreciate it.

Even though I'm 23, will doormen in general still be bastards and pull the "drivers license or valid passport" ****e?. I usually carry a few student cards with me, but to be sure, I want to sort myself out before leaving Galway.

    TIA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

yea you can wear jeans and and runners for most places !

generally jeans are fine but runners and sportswear are not as acceptable, esp if you plan to go clubbin.

Depends on where you want to go. Jeans are usually fine everywhere, but for the "trendy" pubs and night-clubs you'll need to be wearing shoes and a shirt. Personally I don't go anywhere that you need to wear shoes to get in.

the dresscode is fairly important for certain places..but don't forget the basic rulez here in oll-town.

    -don't make sudden arm movements
    -don't stare
-keep your money and valuables hidden at all times
    -bring rubber
-avoid taxi queue with drunk people
-keep visible a card with your bloodtype
    -have fun

here on the northside we generally wear bearskins with the skull of a wolf to fasten it with. The large club is optional but recommended.
On the southside most people go with tophat and tails and a slapper attached to the side.

While here on the Westside (Tallaght boyz reprezent!!!!) we all wear our regulation 1992 Nike/Addidas shell-suits, along with a fetching pair of Nike Air Max, a baseball cap worn at a 45 degree angle and at least four soverign rings (more depending on your social standing). Also this season, a whispy "nackertache" is a must for both guys and girls.

Just join the army of shirts, tight jeans and black shoes and you have nothing to worry about......... or you could go to pub thats not anal about dress code....

Pfft. I wear runners everywhere and rarely get refused. It's got more to do with your general look and attitude.

That said, I also refuse to go anywhere you have to pay in, so the two might go hand-in-hand :)

jeans, shirt and shoes, should be grand. I usually just wear a random t-shirt and jeans and get in most places i try

i could name a few places, but it all depends what your into, dance music, rock/indie, live music etc, or if you just wanna chill out with a few pints and shoot a few games of pool before heading out clubbin etc etc...

doormen/bouncers are wànkers in dublin to put it precisely, I still get ID'd for most places, infact even the places that have no plans on letting me in ask for id before telling im to drunk..

as the ole saying goes - 'expect a kick in the balls and if you get a slap in the face take it as a bonus'

so yeh, take your id :)

    Cheers mate ;)

Shoes, Shirt, Jeans is my usual club gear. As for the club, I'm in to dance, but there is a large crowd of us, and live music might be in order. The majority of the crowd are in their late 20s, early 30s, so I doubt Red Box is on the agenda. However one or two of them has been to Spirt on a few occasions, but at this point in time, I really couldn't care less where we go, just as long as our night doesn't get destroyed by some egotistical bouncer. Quite frankly I'm easy going, as I never had a bad night out with people I'll have at hand.

    I can't fuppin wait TBH :)

one thing you'll have to to if it's a large group is stagger the times two or three of you go into a club. Especially in Spirit. me and three other guys went there one night but the bouncer wouldn't let us in as we were a "group of lads"! what, 4 of us????
Don't go up to a club if there are more than 3 of you.
And if there's a gang of 10, forget it!

yeh definately dont try and get in in groups, split up down to about 3 people as kananga said, otherwise you just wont get in anywhere for some reason.

If its live music your after check out whelans on camden street, usually a good spot everytime ive been there anyway. Spirit is ok apart from the fact its €5 a pint, but on the plus side its open till 5am..

alternatively do what i do, get drunk and see where it leads you to, usually an adventure if anything else :p

If your heading into a club,
dont make conversation with doorman, just walk up and say Hi
and keep walking unless he stops

if he asks for id, just say 'sure' and whip out your passport, never be checky or anything as they don't like this at all

dont bother with student cards or anything as bouncers just love an excuse not to let you in.

try to avoid going in with loads of blokes, if your with 2/3 guys just say that your girfriends just went in two minutes ago, a few times that has worked with me

    clothes :
    Shoes
    Shirt
    jeans/trousers
    neat hair

if you look like a knacker they wont let you in!

all the advice about groups is totally true..
as for clothes, and shoes specifically, i must say I have never had a problem re-shoes.

the problem with neat dress essential places is that they are full of neat dress essential people if ya know what I mean :/

If you aren't on for a mad allnighter, the Odeon up by the POD does a pretty good late bar and is fine for dress etc. Its nice and close to plenty ofplaces to go out afterwards as well

ye the above is true rember heading into spirit and fireworks with a group of 30 ppl ( fireworks we told the bouncers b4 we went in that we were a staff party ) but spirit we had to break the numbers down to be allowed into the club . there very strict in there i know one lad got refused because his zip was down and would not allow him in because of that one reason .

since there is varied age group id prob say stick with spirit it dose have 3 differeny types of music in there

Point taken on the whole group thing. TBH there will be more women in the group than lads. If I recall there is only my mate, another lad from Dublin, and myself, after than it's women.

TBH its pretty much like some places in Galway. Halo (Galway's newest club) is fairly strict with dress code, in that your shirt must have a collar, or you can forget it. I saw a guy ahead of me in the queue get refused coz the bottom of his jeans were a tad too long and had ripped a bit around the heels (they weren't baggy jeans either), just a bit long. But I have to admit the bouncers were decent enough about it, considering some of the other **** that work on the doors of this city. I hate bouncers that just grab you out of the queue and say "not tonight mate", and give you no reason. If perhaps they gave you a reason then you might have a chance of sorting it out for next time, because quite frankly I've seen people get refused for no visible reason.

But as I said already, shoes, shirt, jeans, passport, and the best intentions to have a good night :p

Elexes, as regard not posting, I dunno, I just haven't had a need to post TBH. I'm still here, never gone too far ;)

    Try Kelvar, and a helmet.

Ninja outfits are all the rage in town these days, I heard :D
Apart from that, no facial hair. There is a part of bouncers brains missing so they can't compute them. They become suspicious and hostile at the sight of even a short goatee. I've a goatee and about the only place I don't have hassle getting in is in Ri-Ra's.
    Bouncers are arseholes.
