NTL digital STB stuck on "tune" - NTL claim major crash of Dublin service.

On Friday evening I noticed that a few channels weren't coming in on my STB. I shut it off (powered down at the mains) and restarted it. It wouldn't come up properly... the LCD display says "tune" and nothing else happens. (I shut it down again and reseated the card but to no avail.)

When I called NTL they said (after the obligatory 20 minute wait, just to soften you up!) that they'd had a "major fault" that took down "half of Dublin" and that because of this a lot of people were effected. Thus the earliest they can come out to fix it is next Thursday morning.

    Two questions...
    (1) Does anyone know if I can enter the service menu on the STB and adjust the settings myself? (I don't care if I make an arse of it because the technician has to come on Thursday anyway, so they might as well earn their money!)

    (2) Has anyone heard of this "major fault"?

Don't know if anyone else is working, but I've been able to get Digital all day today. Just curious if it's only me...

    In Tallaght,
The only thing I noticed was that almost all of the channels had blank screens fo about a 1/2 hour around 5pm. Other than that it's been fine.

The non-MTV music channels seem to be particularly bad at black outs lately.

I had the same problem about a week ago. I plugged out the unit over the weekend. On return when I plugged it in, it was stuck on tune. Eventually NTL came out and replaced the unit.

    update: mixed results so far...

I repowered the STB last night while holding down the "Services" and up arrow keys. (Tip spotted in DigitalSpy.co.uk forums.) After flashing a few lights on the front panel it came up working fine. The channels were in the new positions / new EPG.

I left it turned on for the night and this morning the STB front panel displayed "Stop" and there was no signal to the TV. Powered it down and back up and got the "NTL are updating your set top box" screen. This was still there after 20 mins, so I did the "Services" and up arrow thing again and it's back working.

NTL are due to call out tomorrow morning, but if the STB is still working when I get back from work today I'll cancel the callout.
