IBB in theory since it's wireless but in practice it's a different story...

Nah ah, IBB just left the building... here's my pings to www.boards.ie

    Ping statistics for 217.114.166.147:
    Packets: Sent = 24, Received = 24, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 27ms, Maximum = 83ms, Average = 36ms

They upgraded the Tallaght tower at about 9:00pm tonight (thursday) and its perfect now. I've been playing counter-strike with pings of 50-80 for the last 3 hours. there's the occasional spike of ping, but thats probably the UK2 servers. I'm 100% happy with ping on IBB now, and i can consostantly get 350kbps+ downloads, and quite often i get the full 512kbps! AND most importantly, there's no cap.

    Life just got good.

very nice ubah... but who's your isp?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 743 ✭✭✭UbahOne

IOL residential...even when there was all that trouble...pings were always the same. Ive realised that this is to my advantage for on line gaming. I didnt know that before...but im happy.

I also figured out what eats my cap...browsing the web constantly. Downloads itself dont. Cos i downloaded 5 albums and that was half a gig. I wont need anymore albums until new ones are released now...

To get best pings i reckon ISDN on ESAT beats most DSL packages except those lucky enuff to get ESATS Business low pinging DSL.

these are my pings using Esat Surf No Limits 64k ISDN

surprised BK hasnt responded to this, hes usually in like a flash. The best steady ping u will get is Esat Business Dsl. It is the only dsl in the country that uses Fastpath. After that Esat residential should be competitive with Eircom Starter, the latter of which will turn your interleaving down very low if u pester them according to Mindphuck.

However, if youre from bogland, ISDN may be your only option. I used it for a couple of years. A god sent compared to 56k. But u iwll notice in team oriented games when more than 4 or 5 players are in the vacinity, your ping will become unstable and spike a lot.

Ive heard too many bad reports of Netsource to consider them for purely gaming purposes.

I wouldnt consider anything wireless and the pings wont be stable.

    so imo

    1. Esat Business - about 110 a month i think
    2. Eircom Starter - 55 a month
    3. Esat Residential

My IBB pings have gone to **** again, at the moment i cannot recommend them for gaming purposes. I thought they had fixed the high pings with their upgrade of the tallaght tower last night, but it was not to be.

I got stable pings of 40-80 last night, but today... HAH more like unstable pings between 200 and 1000

I'm gonna ask them to refund my installation and take that equipment away and give me ripwave on 8-1 contention, as ripwave pings are a lot more stable and low it seems.

From what I have heard and IMO:
    1. Esat Business(lowest pings around)
    2. Esat Residential(pings constantly stable and low)
    3. IBB when there stable(Heard there good when there on)
    4. Eircom residential(Unpredictable)

ROFL- decided to read every thread this morning so was a bit slow in geting here. Nothing to do in work atm :p

As has been said Esat BT Business would give best pings.
10ms is the lowest you'll get with it but to Jolt you would get anything from 15-30.

The rest use interleaving (altho set to low, full interleaving wont give a ping below 45). Pings are higher but less chance of PL due to noise on the line.
Pings for the RADSL providers can be found in the sticky.

    Dar:
I see your attempting to upgrade your toaster. Getting bored of 'burnt toast' ? ;)

Kool, thnx for all the replies, Im gona get IOLBB, it looks like the best option, now that its up and running fine, Constant good pings and a 5GB cap for me is fine thats 200 hours of gaming a month, which evens out to 7 hours a day which is more than enough. Just gotta wait for the Newbridge Exchange to be activated. Oh another question is how far from the exchange can be u to qualify for BB? is it 8KM? THnx

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

    5.5 km for RADSL afaik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

In Ireland for RADSL its 5.5 i think (as previous poster said)
Thats 5.5km as the cable runs not the crow flies.

Hehe guess im lucky im getting esat bt business :0 so is B-K as well hehe :)

    Pings are so sweet ,

And I would rather pay the xtra 50 quid a month to have no cap and no interlaeving so if I were you i would go for the esat bt business which is a supreme choice ,

Hey B-K guess what they were on to me as well to pay the insatllation deposit today something about me being a home user and its soley for business so I had to pay the deposit I just told them take it out of my account via direct debit with the mandate I sent them

Some how I have a sneaky feeling It is 19 days starting next week sometime :() ah here is to 4 more weeks of waiting ,

For information concerning Esat bt Business.

You have to pay them in 4 quarterly installments so thats the first installment at 420 + euro due to the installation charge.

the next 3 installment work out at about 327 euro , the cost is 109 euro per month , and when you think about that puttin 30 quid or even 25 a week away in the bank will more than cover your quarterly payments , and that to me is well worth it.

B-K what router are you going to be using > the one they supply or the other one ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,081 ✭✭✭BKtje

Etho_ said the one they supply is a fairly decent one so i'll give that a go. If not i'll just get one of them routers with firewalls rolled into it.

I mailed 'my guy' asking him when i could expect to be hooked up but thus far no reply. Guess he took an early weekend. ;)

A fully interleaved connection doing its thang. Have to say I'm pretty happy, look how stable it is. The delta between the minimum and maximum is just 10ms over 5000 packets.

    Ping statistics for 217.114.166.147:
    Packets: Sent = 5000, Received = 5000, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 59ms, Maximum = 69ms, Average = 64ms

I've been getting uber pings on CS on irelandcs and what was cs.clanradox. On i-stream starter i'm pinging between 20-50 in CS, averages mostly in the 30's. It's gone as low as single figures in the scoreboard ping.

Also, pings to UK CS servers is still kick ass. Never normally going about 60.

I'm using a router rather than modem so I'm sure that has a good impact on a lower ping rather than with a modem which I'm sure would be using some CPU.

Some people dont need to. Some would rather put that extra bit away for a holiday or something...

Pings to Irish sites are high, seemingly cos Energis route thru London. UK pings are fine though, Radox CS server (located in UK now):

That ping is really very high Pie, way too high for gaming over DSL imo.

Netsource ISDN pings 45ish to that server.

i hope to god you're joking about that... some of us still think that 200ms is a great ping!

These are my latest pings to my gateway server (first hop from my computer)

    Ping statistics for 195.26.12.225:
    Packets: Sent = 52, Received = 46, Lost = 6 (11% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 45ms, Maximum = 1059ms, Average = 525ms

And these fancy ones are to a UK2 CS server, usually its very low ping (about 30 for everyone else)
    Ping statistics for 82.67.253.64:
    Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Having played many FPS games with a 250-800ms ping for the past few years, 70ms is playable to say the least. ;]

Though it is galling to see a mate in Cambridge playing on Irish servers with a 25ms ping (NTL Cable).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 138 ✭✭Beck Amerdam

Well I used to play CS with pings on my tuned up 56k baby of about 100-150ms so the drop down to 60 hasnt made a huge difference. It's still very smooth and playable though. I don't see what knocking a further 30ms off the ping time would do really.

well with esat bt business your practically pinging at 15-30 in game to jolt and no interleaving helps , also the fact that your nearly 95% guaranteed the full 512kps die to the contentaion rate and the 8 meg backhaul.

Im just happy im getting bb in honestly id be happy with an isdn line , although I know netsource are spot on at connecting there customers and all seems to be going smoothly due to the no pipe , the unpredictability of the uncapped service on a contention ratio like that and with no great backhaul has stared me away from it

I figure it wont be long before more and more people start signing up and non stop downloading , so I look to see more complaints from users in a month or 2.

B-K is the person aka your accounts manager helpful does he/she know what there on about ?

I have to admit the accounts manager I got is ****ing great I made one mistake in the sign up form were I asked my fone be unbundled and soley for dsl. She spotted this and rang me immediatly.I have to say just from her that esatBt customer care is spot on in my opinion and you dont get the run around that eircom give you.

B-K I will see how the pings and downloads go for the first week with the modem they supply ,if its not great ie above 50 then ill get a adsl router and firewall, mite as well invest in one.

B-k did you get the internal or usb modem ?
