    Hi
Myself and a friend have been discussing this for a while and i beginning to think ill start on it now.

Basically a website where you can buy linux/bsd Distros, live cds for say 2-3 euro each. Ive looked around and i havent seen many places to get them, not from ireland anyway.

So what do you reckon, viable option or a go no where idea ??

    Proper boxed versions?

not to start with, maybe as things go on we can sell the boxed versions.
This site would basically be to help people with bandwidth limits, so downloading an ISO is not an option.
I know Linux.ie have a swap cd program going on as do several other places. So thats why im wondering if there really is a need for it.

Dont know if it would be commercially viable but i would be utilising it right now if it was setup:D

Think ya would have to charge more than €3 though.

well at this stage im just trying to figure out if people would actually use it. I dont think its something that ill get rich doing but it will give me the chance to mess around with various distros while im at it.

I was thinking a basic cd with whatever kind of cover i can find, plastic sleeves if i have to but hopefully something better, the cd will be a CDR with the software on it. What else do you need really ?

Legality is one problem. I can give two examples in particular, I don't know if it's limited to these or there are others:

    - You can't redistribute "Red Hat" as Red Hat, you have to call it something else. I /think/ you can distribute it at a profit, but I wouldn't swear to it.

    - SuSE is a bollix. The last time I wanted someone to burn it for me, Rick Moen on ILUG told me that they can't, so I emailed SuSE who said they can, and then Rick said again they can't. As it happens, according to SuSE you can't distribute it for money either way, but they don't even seem to know themselves!

By the way, I've wanted to do something like this for ages too, so if you're looking for someone on the Internet side of things, gimme a shout.

thanks for that adam ill have to check up on that stuff. i could see where it may be a problem with suse and redhat as they tend to be going more proprietary and actually have to start running more like a company.
Thats 2 of many that i have to watch out for and see what i can do legally. i imagine Slackware, Gentoo, etc wouldnt have the same restrictions.
Judging from the replies im getting here there does seem to be a market for it, one that hopefully will get larger.

This service is intended to help those that are unable to copy their legitimate games for backup purposes.

I'd say linux disks could be self financing but not profitable...

I am more than happy to burn people any copy of Linux that someone wants for free (I'm listed on linux.ie). All you have to do is hand me a few blank CDs.

I'm in Galway City (actually behind the racecourse).

Sticky that if you want Mr Mod.

Thats very nice of you Jaden and i appreciate what your saying. i realise thath the linux community is one that seeks to help its own.
While its great to have that and offer to burn copies for anyone you still have to get the blank cds from them and return the cds when they are done, plus if they are not based in galway then it involves postage both ways.
Im not trying to rip people off or make loads of money or anything but id like to provide the cds if there is people out there that will use the site. Theres nothing to say that more people cant get involved to help out.

The listed people from the delightful ILUG community will of course arrange for CD's for people on request.

At least two people who've posted here are on the list.
