This joke works better in speech form but here goes all the same:

There's this woman who knows no French and so, pronounces the word gâteau like "gat-ocks" instead of like "gat-oh".

So, one day, this woman goes to buy a cake at a fancy cake shop. "Hi, I'd like to buy that "gat-ocks" there please", says she to the shop owner. This shop owner looks at her disdainfully and says, "Actually, madam, I think you'll find that the correct pronunciation is "gat-oh".

    Here comes the punchline!

To which the woman replies,"Oh bolloh".

Except I knew there was something wrong here!
The joke only works if you use the plural of cake - gâteaux (or the brand name if you like). N'est pas?

-> move to French forum? Zut alors.

Trust me, you can't judge it until you try *saying* it to someone.

Myself and some friends have taken to saying bollo all the time now after hearing this.

As for gateaux being the plural, je le sais, but the woman is supposed to know no French, i guess I should have put "Could I have 2 gateaux please"

THat was the first time i posted a joke here - it's quite nerve-wracking, actually!

Well - yeah - like that is what I am saying - the joke only works if the woman is asking for gateaux (the implication being that she saw the word for cakes written but no one told her how to pronounce it - ie that the "x" is silent).
If she saw the word gateau written - why would she think it was pronounced with an "x" at the end? Who would?

And sorry, because I know taking jokes apart and over-explaining them never makes them any funnier...

Defense de fumer, Rodney, defense de fumer.
